Asha Bhosle (born 8 September 1933) is a famous Indian singer, businesswoman, actress, and TV personality. She is known for her amazing voice and has sung in many Indian cinema films. People often call her one of the greatest and most important singers in Hindi cinema.

Asha Bhosle's career has lasted over eighty years! She has recorded thousands of songs for movies and albums in many different Indian languages. She has won many awards, including two National Film Awards and a record seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. In 2000, she received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is India's highest award for cinema. In 2008, the Indian government honored her with the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second-highest civilian award. The Guinness World Records recognized her in 2011 as the artist who has recorded the most songs in music history.

Asha Bhosle is the sister of another legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar. She is famous for her wide vocal range and for being able to sing many different styles of music. Her songs include film music, pop, ghazals (a type of poetry set to music), bhajans (devotional songs), traditional Indian classical music, folk songs, qawwalis (a form of Sufi devotional music), and Rabindra Sangeet (songs written by Rabindranath Tagore). Besides Hindi, she has sung in over 20 Indian and foreign languages. In 2013, she acted for the first time in the film Mai and received praise for her acting.

Her Early Life and Start

Asha Mangeshkar was born in a small village called Goar in Sangli, India. She came from a musical family; her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a classical singer and actor. When Asha was nine years old, her father passed away. Her family then moved to Mumbai. To help her family, Asha and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar started singing and acting in films.

Her first film song was "Chala Chala Nav Bala" for the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943). She sang her first Hindi film song, "Saawan Aaya," in 1948. Her first solo Hindi song was for the movie Raat Ki Raani (1949).

Her Rise in Bollywood

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, other female singers were very popular. However, Asha Bhosle sang many songs, especially in smaller films. She started getting noticed with songs composed by Sajjad Hussain for Sangdil (1952). That same year, she sang 10 out of 11 songs in the film Chham Chhama Chham.

Soon, famous director Bimal Roy gave her a chance to sing in Parineeta (1953). Raj Kapoor chose her to sing all the songs in Boot Polish (1954), which made her even more popular.

Asha Bhosle became very successful with music director O. P. Nayyar in films like Naya Daur (1957). Her duets with Mohammad Rafi, such as "Maang Ke Saath Tumhara" and "Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri," became huge hits. She sang all the songs for the main actress in Naya Daur, which was a big step for her. She also worked with other great composers like Sachin Dev Burman and Ravi.

In 1966, Asha Bhosle's songs for R.D. Burman's film Teesri Manzil became very popular. Songs like "Aaja Aaja," "O Haseena Zulfonwali," and "O Mere Sona Re" were big hits. She worked closely with R.D. Burman, and their partnership led to many successful songs and eventually, they got married. During the 1960s and 70s, she was often the singing voice for the famous actress and dancer Helen.

In 1981, Asha Bhosle sang beautiful ghazals for the film Umrao Jaan, including "Dil Cheez Kya Hai." These songs were different from her usual style and won her first National Film Award. A few years later, she won another National Award for "Mera Kuchh Saamaan" from Ijaazat (1987).

In 1995, at 62, she sang for actress Urmila Matondkar in the movie Rangeela. Songs like "Tanha Tanha" and "Rangeela Re," composed by A. R. Rahman, were very popular. She continued to have hits in the 2000s, including "Radha Kaise Na Jale" from Lagaan (2001). Asha Bhosle has worked with many talented music directors throughout her career.

O. P. Nayyar

O. P. Nayyar was a very important composer for Asha Bhosle. He helped her create her own unique singing style. They worked together on many hit films like Baap Re Baap (1955) and Naya Daur (1957). Their songs were often lively and romantic, such as "Aaiye Meharbaan" and "Yeh Hai Reshmi Zulfon Ka Andhera." They also created popular duets with Mohammad Rafi, like "Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri." Their partnership ended in 1972.

Khayyam

Khayyam was another composer who recognized Asha Bhosle's talent early on. Their most famous work together is the beautiful ghazals from the film Umrao Jaan.

Ravi

Music director Ravi loved Asha Bhosle's voice. She sang for his first movie Vachan (1955), and the lullaby "Chanda Mama Door Ke" became an instant hit. They recorded many types of songs, including devotional songs (bhajans) and fun duets like "C A T...Cat, Cat Maane Billi" with Kishore Kumar.

Sachin Dev Burman

Sachin Dev Burman also saw Asha Bhosle's amazing talent. When he had disagreements with Lata Mangeshkar for a few years, Asha Bhosle became his main female singer. They created many memorable songs for films like Nau Do Gyarah and Kala Pani.

Rahul Dev Burman (Pancham)

Asha Bhosle's partnership with Rahul Dev Burman (also known as Pancham) was very special. They first worked together on Teesri Manzil (1966). She sang many different types of songs for him, including rock, disco, and classical. They recorded many popular duets with Kishore Kumar, such as "Jaan-E-Jaan Dhundhta Phir Raha." In the 1980s, they created subtle and emotional songs for films like Ijaazat (1987), including "Mera Kuch Saaman". Asha Bhosle married R. D. Bappi Lahiri

Asha Bhosle had a long collaboration with Bappi Lahiri, singing for many hit films like Namak Halaal (1982) and Sharaabi (1984). She also sang the memorable ghazal "Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intazaar Aaj Bhi Hai" for Aitbaar (1985).

Ilaiyaraaja

The famous South Indian composer Ilaiyaraaja started working with Asha Bhosle in the early 1980s. Their first collaboration was for the film Moondram Pirai (1982), which was later remade in Hindi as Sadma.

A. R. Rahman

Composer Anu Malik and Asha Bhosle have recorded many songs together, including hits like "Yeh Lamha Filhaal Jee Lene De" from Filhaal and "Kitabein Bahut Si" from Baazigar.

Private Albums

In 1987, she teamed up with lyricist Gulzar and R.D. Burman for a double album called Dil Padosi Hai. In 1995, she learned classical music from maestro Ali Akbar Khan. Later, they recorded an album called Legacy, which was nominated for a Grammy Award.

In the 1990s, she experimented with remixed versions of R.D. Burman's songs, which became very popular. In 1997, her pop album Janam Samjha Karo was a huge hit and won her an MTV Award. In 2002, she became a music composer herself with the album Aap Ki Asha. She also sang duets with Pakistani singer Adnan Sami for his albums.

In 2005, Asha Bhosle released an album called Asha as a tribute to famous ghazal singers. She recorded classic ghazals with modern music to appeal to younger listeners. She also sang with famous people like actors Sanjay Dutt and Urmila Matondkar, and even cricketer Brett Lee.

Concerts and International Collaborations

Asha Bhosle has performed in concerts all over the world, including Canada, Dubai, the UK, and the US. In 2007, she toured with singers Sonu Nigam, Kunal Ganjawala, and Kailash Kher in a tour called "The Incredibles."

Bengali and Marathi Career

Asha Bhosle has also had a very successful career in Bengali and Marathi music.

Bengali Songs

She sang her first Bengali song in 1958. She recorded many "Pooja Songs" in Bengali, which are special songs for festivals. R.D. Burman also converted some of his Hindi songs into Bengali versions for her. She sang many songs for Bengali films in the 1970s and 80s. In 2014, she released an album called "Pancham Tumi Kothay" to honor her husband R.D. Burman.

Marathi Songs

Asha Bhosle started singing in Marathi films with Gokulcha Raja. She has sung thousands of Marathi film songs and non-film songs (Bhavgeet). She also sang traditional Marathi stage music (Natya Sangeet). She won the 1962 Maharashtra State Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the Marathi film Manini. She also sang many Marathi devotional songs.

Her Personal Life

Asha Bhosle is an excellent cook and loves cooking. She is known for her delicious kadai ghosht and biryani. She even runs successful restaurants in Dubai and Kuwait called "Bhosle's," which serve traditional North-Western Indian food. She personally trained the chefs for her restaurants.

Asha Bhosle's house is in South Mumbai. She has three children. Her youngest child, Anand Bhosle, manages her career. Her grandson, Chaitanya Bhosle, is also a musician and part of a boy band. Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, is an emerging singer and dancer who has sung with Asha Bhosle.

Asha Bhosle married Rahul Dev Burman in 1980. This was the second marriage for both of them.

Rivalry with Lata Mangeshkar

People often talk about a rivalry between Asha Bhosle and her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, even though both sisters say these stories are not true. As children, they were very close. However, there were some tensions between them, especially when Asha eloped to get married.

In her early career, Asha Bhosle was often compared to her elder sister. She worked hard to create her own unique singing style so she wouldn't be in Lata's shadow. Despite this, Asha and Lata have also sung many duets together, including "Man Bhawan Ke Ghar aye" (Chori Chori, 1956) and "Main Chali Main Chali" (Padosan, 1968). In recent years, they have often been seen together, enjoying each other's company.

She has won seven Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards. She won her first two in 1967 and 1969. After 1979, she asked not to be considered for these awards to give new talent a chance. She also received a Special Award in 1996 for Rangeela and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
