The Gibbo River is a river in Victoria, Australia. It's a "perennial river," which means it flows all year round! This river is part of the huge Murray-Darling basin, one of the biggest river systems in Australia. The Gibbo River starts in the Australian Alps, a mountain range, and flows south. It eventually joins another stream called Morass Creek near Lake Dartmouth.

Where Does the Gibbo River Flow?

The Gibbo River begins when two smaller streams, Straight Running Creek and Sassafras Creek, join together. This joining point is called a confluence. The river starts in a quiet state forest area, not far from the Great Dividing Range.

The Gibbo River flows mostly south and southwest. Along its journey, three smaller streams, called tributaries, flow into it. These tributaries add more water to the Gibbo River. Finally, the Gibbo River meets Morass Creek at Lake Dartmouth. This lake was created by the Dartmouth Dam. The river drops about 191 metres (627 ft) (which is like going down a tall building!) over its 19-kilometre (12 mi) path.

Fun Things to Do at the Gibbo River

The Gibbo River is a great spot for fishing! You can find different types of fish here:

  • Brown trout: These fish usually weigh around 200 grams (7.1 oz), but some can be as big as 1 kilogram (2.2 lb).
  • Rainbow trout: These are smaller, usually around 200 grams (7.1 oz).
  • River blackfish: These are quite small, about 60 grams (2.1 oz).
  • Carp: You might even catch some larger carp, up to 10 kilograms (22 lb).

There's also a nice camping area about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Omeo. It's located on the road between Corryong and Benambra. At the campsite, you'll find picnic tables and BBQs where you can cook over a wood fire.

History of the Gibbo River Area

Near where the Gibbo River and Morass Creek flow into Lake Dartmouth, there's a special area called the Dart River Goldfields Area. This area is about 35,000 hectares (86,000 acres) big. It's important because it shows us what gold mining was like a long time ago. Many old machines and tools from the 1870s are still there. It's like a history book preserved in the landscape!
