History of Gibbon
Gibbon started as a railway town around 1865. A railway town is a place that grew because a railroad line was built nearby. Many early settlers were immigrants from Germany and Scandinavia.
The town officially became a city in 1887. It was named after General John Gibbon. He was a commander at Fort Snelling from 1880 to 1882. By 1900, Gibbon had grown to a population of 545 people.

Gibbon covers a total area of about 1.72 square kilometers (0.66 square miles). All of this area is land.
The city is located along Minnesota State Highway 19. This highway meets Sibley County Road 2 in Gibbon.
