Gigi's Filmmaking Journey
Starting Her Career: 2011-2018
While studying at Capilano University in 2009, Gigi met two important people: Luke Bramley and Gordon Cheng. They became her partners in making films. Their first project together was a short film called Dead Crossing (2011). This film explored themes of immigration and horror.
In 2013, Gigi helped start a film company called Luchagore Productions. She co-founded it with Luke Bramley, Gordon Cheng, and Raynor Shima.
In 2014, Gigi directed a short film called Día de los Muertos. It was part of a horror movie collection called México Bárbaro. This film was shown for the first time at the 2014 Etheria Film Night. She then directed El Gigante (2015), which was based on a book. El Gigante was later turned into a graphic novel.
After seeing El Gigante, a film executive from Warner Bros. contacted Gigi. This led to Luchagore Productions suggesting many ideas. One of these ideas became La Quinceañera. Gigi also made short films for competitions, like Slam and Testament. These films won awards for being the "Best Picture" and having the "Best Death" scene.
Her music video, Paloma, was the first video shown at the 2015 Morbido Fest. El Gigante was featured at film festivals in Melbourne and Sydney in 2015. It also won an award at the 2016 Macabre Faire Film Festival. Her next short film, Madre de Dios, was praised for its unique style.
In 2016, Gigi won an award for "Artistic Innovation" from Women in Film and Television Vancouver. Later that year, she directed a part of the horror movie ABCs of Death 2.5. In 2017, her short film Bestia was recognized for its style and psychological horror. It won "Best Short Film" at the Blood in the Snow Canadian Film Festival.
Gigi's big project, La Quinceañera, was announced in 2017. It was a new show for Stage 13, a part of Warner Bros. Digital Networks. The show featured Mia Xitlali and Bertila Damas. It premiered at the Morbido Film Festival in October 2017 and won the "Audience Favourite" award. In 2018, La Quinceañera became available on the Studio+ app. It was also shown at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. Critics praised La Quinceañera for its strong female characters.
