His films have won many important awards. These include five Academy Awards (also known as Oscars), three Golden Globe Awards, and three BAFTA Awards.

Some of his most well-known movies are Amores perros (2000), 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006), Biutiful (2010), Birdman (2014), and The Revenant (2015).

Amores Perros and Biutiful were both nominated for the Best International Feature Film Oscar. His films 21 Grams and Babel were very popular and successful. For Birdman, he won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. The next year, he won Best Director again for The Revenant. This made him one of only three directors to win this award two years in a row!

Iñárritu was the first Mexican filmmaker to be nominated for Best Director or Producer at the Academy Awards. He was also the first to win Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. He and fellow Mexican filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro are often called "The Three Amigos" in the film world.

Early Life and Travels

Alejandro González Iñárritu was born in Mexico City, Mexico, on August 15, 1963. He was the youngest of seven children. His father was a banker who faced financial difficulties when Alejandro was young.

Alejandro had a tough time in school and was expelled when he was 16 or 17. After that, he briefly left home. He then worked as a sailor on cargo ships, traveling through the Mississippi River and visiting Europe and Africa. These travels when he was young greatly influenced him as a filmmaker. Many of his movies are set in places he visited during this time. After his travels, he returned to Mexico City and studied communications at Universidad Iberoamericana.

Career Beginnings

1984–1999: From Radio to Film

Iñárritu started his career in 1984 as a radio host at WFM, a popular rock music station in Mexico. He would create playlists that told a story. He also interviewed famous musicians like Robert Plant and Elton John. Later, he became the youngest producer for Televisa, a large media company in Latin America.

From 1987 to 1989, he wrote music for six Mexican movies. During this time, he met writer Guillermo Arriaga. They began working together on screenplays. Iñárritu says that music has influenced him even more than movies. In the early 1990s, he started his own production company called Z Films. There, he began writing, producing, and directing short films and commercials. He also studied directing with well-known teachers. In 1995, he directed his first TV pilot, Detrás del dinero (Behind the Money).

In 2000, Iñárritu directed his first full-length movie, Amores perros. This film explored Mexican society through three different stories that connect. Amores perros was shown at the Cannes Film Festival and won a major award. It was also the first movie for actor Gael García Bernal. Amores perros was the first part of a group of three films Iñárritu made with writer Guillermo Arriaga, often called the "Death Trilogy." It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

After Amores Perros, Iñárritu and Arriaga used a similar story structure for 21 Grams (2003). This movie starred Benicio del Toro, Naomi Watts, and Sean Penn. It was shown at the Venice Film Festival. Del Toro and Watts were nominated for Oscars for their acting in this film.

Iñárritu also directed short films during this time. In 2001, he made an 11-minute film for 11'09"01 September 11, a collection of short films about the September 11 attacks. In 2007, he made "ANNA" for Chacun son cinéma, a collection of 33 short films celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival.

His third film in the "Death Trilogy" was Babel (2006), also written by Arriaga. Babel tells four connected stories set in Morocco, Mexico, the United States, and Japan. It starred Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, and Gael Garcia Bernal. Many of the other actors were not professionals. The film won Iñárritu the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, making him the first Mexican director to win it. Babel was very successful and received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film's composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, won an Oscar for Best Original Score. Babel also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. After Babel, Iñárritu and Arriaga decided to work separately.
