Gylmar dos Santos Neves (born August 22, 1930 – died August 25, 2013), known simply as Gilmar, was a famous Brazilian football player. He played as a goalkeeper for two big Brazilian clubs, Corinthians and Santos. Gilmar was also a key player for the Brazilian national team in three World Cups.

Many people consider him the best Brazilian goalkeeper of the 20th century. He was also named one of the best goalkeepers in the world by the IFFHS, an organization that keeps football records. Gilmar was known for his calm style on the field and his peaceful personality.

His full name, Gylmar, comes from his parents' names: Gilberto and Maria. Gilmar was the main goalkeeper for the legendary Santos team of the 1960s, which included the famous player Pelé. In 1998, he received the FIFA Order of Merit, a special award from FIFA.

Club Career Highlights

Gilmar was born in Santos, a city in São Paulo, Brazil. He started his football journey playing for his hometown team, Jabaquara.

Playing for Corinthians

In 1951, Gilmar joined Corinthians, a very popular club. With Corinthians, he helped the team win the Campeonato Paulista (the São Paulo state championship) three times. These wins were in 1951, 1952, and 1954.

Joining Santos FC

In 1961, Gilmar moved to Santos, another top Brazilian club. This Santos team was so good that they were called Os Santásticos, meaning "The Santastics." Gilmar quickly became the starting goalkeeper.

With Santos, he won many important titles:

  • Five more Campeonato Paulista titles (1962, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968).
  • Five Taça Brasil titles (1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965). The Taça Brasil was a national championship.
  • Two Copa Libertadores titles (1962 and 1963). This is the biggest club competition in South America.
  • Two Intercontinental Cups (1962 and 1963). These were matches against the best club teams from Europe. In 1962, they beat Eusébio's Benfica, and in 1963, they won against Milan.
