Glacier is a small community in Whatcom County, Washington, United States. It's located in the North Fork Nooksack River Valley. This area is about 906 feet (276 meters) above sea level.

Glacier is very close to Mount Baker, a large mountain. It's only about 10 miles northwest of the mountain's summit, which is nearly 10,000 feet tall! Glacier is the closest town to Mount Baker and is about a 20-minute drive from the Mount Baker Ski Area. There's also a Glacier Public Service Center nearby, where staff from the United States Forest Service and National Park Service help visitors.

How Glacier Was Founded

The community of Glacier was started and named in 1909 by a person named Jennie Vaughn.

Early Activities and Growth

At first, people came to Glacier for gold mining and logging. These activities helped the area grow and attracted interest from the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad. This railroad helped connect Glacier to other places. The area became more accessible to the public after the Mount Baker Highway was built in 1923.
