A Look at Gladwin's Past

Gladwin County was named after Henry Gladwin. He was a British military leader in Detroit during a conflict called Pontiac's War. The county got its name in 1831 and was officially set up in 1875.

The city of Gladwin started in 1875. This was during a time when Michigan had a big "lumber boom." This means many trees were cut down and used for wood. The city is located on the Cedar River.

At first, the city was called Cedar. But people found out that another town in Michigan already had that name. So, the city was renamed Gladwin, just like the county.

The first church in Gladwin was a Methodist church. It was finished on March 31, 1878. In the fall of 1878, the first schoolhouse was built. It was later replaced by a bigger school in 1883. Gladwin officially became a village in 1885.
