A Look Back: Glen Elder's History
Glen Elder started as a town called West Hampton in 1871. People who wanted to develop the area planned it out. They built a big gristmill there, which is a factory that grinds grain into flour.
The town later changed its name to Glen Elder. This happened when the local post office, which was already called Glen Elder, moved to the new town site. The name "Glen Elder" comes from a group of box elder trees that grew nearby. Glen Elder officially became an incorporated city in 1879.

Learning in Glen Elder: Education
The public schools in Glen Elder are part of the Waconda USD 272 school district.
- The elementary school for the district is Lakeside Elementary School. It is located in Cawker City.
- The district's high school is Lakeside High School. It is in Downs. Their school mascot is the Knights.
In 1971, Cawker City High School and Glen Elder High School joined together. They formed Waconda East High School, and their mascot was the Vikings. Later, in 2003, Waconda East High School combined with Downs High School to create the current USD 272 district.
Glen Elder High School, whose mascot was the Bearcats, closed when the schools combined. The district also used to have Glen Elder Elementary School and Glen Elder Junior High School.
