Early Life and Family
Glenn Ingvar Hysén was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. He came from a family that loved football. His grandfather, Erik Hysén, played for IFK Göteborg. His great-uncle, Carl Hysén, also played for the same club. Glenn's father, Kurt Hysén, played for IFK Göteborg's B-Team.
Glenn started playing football when he was a young boy at a club called IF Warta. When he was a child, he once dreamed of joining the famous Swedish pop group ABBA.
Club Career Highlights
Starting at IFK Göteborg
Glenn Hysén began his professional football journey with IFK Göteborg. His first official game was on 14 May 1979. It was an Allsvenskan match against IFK Norrköping, which ended in a 2–2 draw.
During his first time with Göteborg, he helped the team win several titles. They won the Swedish Championships in 1982 and 1983. They also won the 1981–82 UEFA Cup, a big European competition.
Moving to PSV Eindhoven
In 1983, Glenn was named Sweden's Footballer of the Year. This great performance led him to move to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands. However, he often had to play in different positions, like midfielder or even forward. He did not enjoy his time playing in the Netherlands as much.
Returning to IFK Göteborg
In 1985, Glenn Hysén came back to IFK Göteborg. He helped the team reach the semi-finals of the 1985–86 European Cup. They were eventually knocked out by FC Barcelona after a penalty shootout.
He also helped his club win another Swedish Championship in 1987. And they won their second UEFA Cup title in 1987.
Playing for Fiorentina
After his success with IFK Göteborg and the Swedish national team, Glenn had an offer from Manchester United. Their manager was Alex Ferguson. However, Glenn chose to join Fiorentina in Serie A, Italy. He wanted to play for his former IFK Göteborg manager, Sven-Göran Eriksson, who was at Fiorentina.
Time at Liverpool
Manchester United showed interest in signing Glenn again in 1989. They even invited him to England to see their stadium, Old Trafford. However, negotiations for the transfer stalled.
A few days later, Glenn Hysén signed with Liverpool instead. He made a fantastic debut for Liverpool in the 1989 Charity Shield against Arsenal at Wembley. This made him an instant favorite with the fans.
He scored his first goal for Liverpool in a record-breaking 9–0 win against Crystal Palace. Glenn scored Liverpool's eighth goal in that game. It was special because eight different players scored for Liverpool in that match.
Glenn was a key player in Liverpool's success during the League championship in the 1989–90 season. Alongside captain Alan Hansen and young defender Gary Ablett, he helped Liverpool win their 18th top division title. They finished nine points ahead of Aston Villa.
After this, things became a bit harder for Glenn. Alan Hansen had a long-term injury, which led to his retirement. Then, manager Kenny Dalglish left the club in February 1991. The new manager, Graeme Souness, had different ideas about football. This led to changes that some players, including Glenn, found difficult. Glenn also had some minor injuries. Because of these reasons, Souness decided not to keep him. Glenn left Liverpool in 1992.
Finishing Career at GAIS
In 1992, Glenn Hysén returned to Sweden. He played for GAIS for three seasons. He then retired from professional football in 1994.
International Career
Glenn Hysén played for Sweden's youth national teams. He represented the U17, U19, and U21 teams. He played a total of 25 games for these youth teams between 1976 and 1980.
He made his first appearance for the senior Swedish national team on 6 March 1981. This game was against Northern Ireland. He continued to play for Sweden for the next nine years.
In a 1990 FIFA World Cup qualification match in 1988 against England at Wembley Stadium, Glenn had an amazing defensive performance. He was even given a special high rating by a Swedish newspaper. Glenn was the captain for Sweden at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. However, Sweden lost all three of their first-round matches and left the tournament early.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Glenn Hysén became an assistant coach for Torslanda IK. This experience led him to be part of a reality TV show called FC Z. The show took 15 young men who had never played football before and trained them to play against a real team. On the show, Glenn was the coach of the team FC Zulu. His team even played against his son Tobias's former team, Djurgårdens IF.
In November 2010, Glenn Hysén signed a contract to become a co-head coach for the Swedish division II team Utsiktens BK.
