Glenn Ingvar Hysén (born on 30 October 1959) is a famous Swedish former footballer. He played as a defender for many top clubs. Glenn started his career with IFK Göteborg in 1978. He then played for big teams like PSV Eindhoven, Fiorentina, and Liverpool. He finished his playing days at GAIS in 1994.

Glenn also played for the Swedish national team from 1981 to 1990. He played 68 games for his country. He even represented Sweden at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Glenn was named Sweden's best footballer, winning the Guldbollen award in both 1983 and 1988.

Early Life and Family Background

Glenn Ingvar Hysén was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. Football was a big part of his family. His grandfather, Erik Hysén, and great-uncle, Carl Hysén, both played for IFK Göteborg. Glenn's father, Kurt Hysén, also played for IFK Göteborg's B-Team.

Glenn started playing football at a young age with IF Warta. When he was a child, he had a fun dream. He wanted to become a member of the famous Swedish pop group ABBA.

Club Football Career

Playing for IFK Göteborg

Glenn Hysén began his professional football journey with IFK Göteborg. His first official game was on 14 May 1979. It was an Allsvenskan match against IFK Norrköping, which ended in a 2–2 draw.

During his first time with Göteborg, he helped the team win several titles. They won the Swedish Championship in 1982 and 1983. He also helped them win the 1981–82 UEFA Cup, which was a big European trophy.

Moving to PSV Eindhoven

In 1983, Glenn was named Sweden's Footballer of the Year. His great performances led him to move to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands. However, he didn't enjoy his time there very much. He often had to play in different positions, like midfielder or even forward.

Returning to IFK Göteborg

In 1985, Glenn Hysén came back to IFK Göteborg. He quickly helped the team achieve more success. They reached the semi-finals of the 1985–86 European Cup. They were only knocked out by FC Barcelona after a penalty shootout.

He also helped the club win another Swedish Championship in 1987. That same year, they won their second UEFA Cup title. This showed how important he was to the team's success.

Playing in Italy for Fiorentina

After his great achievements with IFK Göteborg and the Swedish national team, Glenn had many offers. He chose to join Fiorentina in Serie A, Italy. He joined his former IFK Göteborg manager, Sven-Göran Eriksson, there. He even turned down an offer from Manchester United and their famous manager Alex Ferguson.

Time at Liverpool F.C.

In 1989, Manchester United tried to sign Glenn again. He visited their stadium and seemed ready to join. However, Glenn surprised everyone by signing with Liverpool instead.

He made a fantastic start at Liverpool. His first game was against Arsenal in the 1989 Charity Shield at Wembley. Liverpool won, and he became an instant favorite with the fans. He scored his first goal for Liverpool in a huge 9–0 win against Crystal Palace. Eight different players scored in that game, which was very unusual.

Glenn was a key player in Liverpool's success in the League championship during the 1989–90 season. Alongside captain Alan Hansen, he helped Liverpool win their 18th top division title.

After this success, things became a bit harder for Glenn. Alan Hansen had a long-term injury. Then, manager Kenny Dalglish left the club. The new manager, Graeme Souness, had different ideas for the team. This led to some changes that didn't suit all players, including Glenn. He also had some minor injuries. Because of these reasons, Glenn left Liverpool in 1992 on a free transfer.

Finishing His Career at GAIS

In 1992, Glenn returned to Sweden. He played three seasons for GAIS before he stopped playing professional football in 1994.

International Football Career

Glenn Hysén played for Sweden's youth national teams. He played for the U17, U19, and U21 teams a total of 25 times.

He made his first game for the senior Swedish national team on 6 March 1981. This was against Northern Ireland. He continued to play for Sweden for nine years. In a 1990 FIFA World Cup qualification match against England in 1988, Glenn played incredibly well. He was even given a special "wasp" rating by a newspaper for his amazing defending. Glenn was the captain for Sweden at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.
