Glenorie is a lovely rural suburb near Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia. It's about 44 kilometres north-west of Sydney's city centre. Glenorie is part of the beautiful Hills District. It falls under two local councils: The Hills Shire and Hornsby Shire.

Glenorie's History

First People of Glenorie

The first people to live in the Glenorie area were the Darug people. They were the traditional owners of most of what is now Greater Sydney. The Darug people lived in different family groups or clans. Sadly, after Europeans arrived, many of these groups became smaller. This means we don't have much information left about how they lived here.

European Settlement Begins

In 1802, Governor King set aside a large area of land that included Glenorie. Later, in 1816, Governor Macquarie said the area was open for new settlers.

Glenorie was located along the Great North Road. This road was built starting in 1825 by convicts. It connected Sydney to the rich farming lands of the Hunter Valley in the north. The Glenorie area was once part of a big land grant given to George Acres. It also included smaller grants for settlers named Hathaway and Saunders. At first, Glenorie was part of the larger Dural area. It was known as Upper or North Dural.

How Glenorie Got Its Name

In November 1893, the North Dural Progress Association decided to change the name of their settlement. They felt it was becoming a "little township" and needed a proper name. In December, after a lively discussion, they chose two names: 'Hazeldean' and 'Glendorie'.

They sent these names to the Postal Department. The postal authorities eventually picked 'Glenorie'. On October 1, 1894, the local post office officially became the Glenorie Post Office.

The exact meaning of the name Glenorie is still debated. Some local stories say it's an Aboriginal word meaning 'much water'. Other people believe it was named after a town in Scotland, but no one has found a matching place there.
