Glenview is a small city in Kentucky, United States. It is located along the Ohio River in northeastern Jefferson County. In 2020, about 596 people lived there.

Glenview is known for its beautiful old homes. These homes are built on high bluffs, which are like cliffs, overlooking the Ohio River. The city also has one of the highest average incomes in Kentucky.

History of Glenview

The land around Glenview was once a huge estate. It was called "Berry Hill" and owned by James Smalley Bate. Later, in 1868, a meat packer named James C. McFerran bought the estate. He named his horse farm "Glen View."

After McFerran passed away in 1885, John E. Green took over the farm. He changed its name to "Glenview Stock Farm." The community got its own post office on May 11, 1893.

Growth and Development

In the late 1800s, rich families from Louisville started building summer homes east of the city. These homes were in places like Anchorage and Glenview. Over time, some of these summer homes became places where families lived all year.

Early residents of Glenview worked with other towns to open a train line in 1877. This was the Louisville, Harrods Creek and Westport Railroad. It helped people travel to and from Louisville. Famous families, such as the Binghams and Belknaps, moved to the area after the railroad opened. The train line was used until the 1950s.

Many houses in Glenview are part of the Glenview Historic District. This means they are important historical buildings. Some buildings are even listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Ballard School, Boxhill, and Lincliff.

Becoming a City

In the 1960s and 70s, some developers created new communities nearby. They used similar names like Glenview Manor and Glenview Hills. This was because Glenview had a good reputation.

In 1983, the city of Louisville tried to make Glenview part of its larger city area. To prevent this, the people of Glenview asked the state government to make their community a separate city. This request was approved in 1985.

Geography and Location

Glenview is located in the northern part of Jefferson County. The Ohio River forms its border to the northwest. To the southwest, it borders Indian Hills. On all other sides, it is surrounded by the larger Louisville/Jefferson County area.

Interstate 71 runs along the southern edge of Glenview. However, there is no direct way to get onto the highway from the city. Downtown Louisville is about 7 miles (11 km) to the southwest. You can reach it by taking River Road.

The total area of Glenview is about 3.7 square kilometers (1.4 square miles). A very small part of this area, about 0.02 square kilometers (0.01 square miles), is water.
