A Look Back: Glenwillow's History
Glenwillow was created in 1893 from part of Solon Township. It was first set up as a company town by the Austin Powder Company. A company town is a place where a company owns most of the homes and businesses.
Why Austin Powder Moved
Over time, more and more people moved into the areas around Glenwillow, especially in the city of Solon. This made it hard for Austin Powder to safely test its explosive products. Because of this, the company moved its manufacturing operations to Athens, Ohio. The Glenwillow plant closed in 1972.
Modern Development and Growth
In the 1980s, the village worked on improving its roads, water, and other services. It also added a large industrial park, which is an area for businesses and factories. This park covers about 250 acres (1.0 km²).
Glenwillow is part of the Solon City Schools system. This school system is often ranked as one of the best in the U.S. because of its strong academics. This has helped the village grow with new homes and neighborhoods.
In the early 2000s, Glenwillow saw a lot of new investment. Old buildings from the Austin Powder Company, like homes and the general store, were updated. They became new shops, a restaurant, and part of a new town center. A new village park and more housing were also built, creating a modern town layout.
