Land Ownership Dispute

There has been a long-standing disagreement about who owns the land in the Glenwood area. This dispute goes all the way back to a formal agreement called the Treaty of 1855.

Early History of the Dispute

In 1890, a survey was done for the Yakama Reservation. This survey did not include a specific part of the land known as "Tract-D." However, the original map from the 1855 treaty, which did show Tract-D as part of the Yakama lands, was lost for many years.

By the time the original map was found in 1930, a large portion of the Glenwood Valley (about 98,000 acres) had been sold to private owners. Another part (about 21,000 acres) became part of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. This forest is managed by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Efforts to Resolve the Dispute

After more than 100 years of disagreement, efforts were made to settle the issue. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed an order. This order returned the 21,000-acre part of Mt. Adams, including its peak, to the Yakama Nation.

However, this order did not include the 98,000 acres of Tract D in the Glenwood Valley. The Yakama Nation accepted $2.1 million in 1970 for their claims to some of these lands.

Recent Developments

The disagreement about whether Glenwood is part of the Yakama reservation continued. In 2022, Klickitat County argued that Glenwood was not part of the reservation. However, the United States Supreme Court did not agree with Klickitat County's claim. This means the question of jurisdiction over some of these lands remains a complex issue.
