A Look Back: History of Godwin Beach
Godwin Beach gets its name from a man named Charles Godwin. He owned a fish cannery right by the beach a long time ago. This was from 1897 to 1907.
In 1911, Charles Godwin was helping to clean up oil barrels. These barrels had floated away from a stranded ship. While he was working near Toorbul Point, he was sadly lost at sea.
Around 1999, a special monument was put up on the beachfront. It remembers Charles Godwin and his connection to this area.
