The Story of Goetz
Early Land Surveys
The land that became Goetz was first mapped out in 1848. This was done by teams working for the U.S. government. In 1849, a team walked through the woods and swamps. They used special tools like a chain and a compass to mark all the corners of the land sections.
After their work, the surveyor wrote a description of the area. He said that a lot of the land was good for farming. It was mostly flat and had many small rivers and creeks. He also noted that there were cabins and valuable pine trees. The Yellow River made it easy to move timber to markets. The area was heavily covered with trees like birch, sugar maple, linden, elm, pine, and oak.
How Goetz Got Its Name
The town of Goetz was officially created in 1887. It was named after Henry Goetz. He was a farmer who had moved to America from Germany in 1860.
