How Gold's Food Company Started
Gold's was started in 1932 by Tillie and Hyman Gold. They began their business in their apartment building in Brooklyn, New York. Tillie would grate and bottle horseradish by hand. Before this, the couple used to fix and sell radios.
Soon, their children, Morris, Herbert, and Manny, began helping. They would help their father deliver products using their bikes and the train. Morris Gold remembered how he and his father would travel by train to sell horseradish to stores. He would stay at the train station to save the train fare.
Growing the Business and New Homes
The sons worked hard to make the business bigger. By 1956, they needed a much larger place to work. So, the company built a new factory from scratch in the Kensington neighborhood of Brooklyn. This factory was their home until 1994.
In 1994, Gold's moved to Hempstead. To remember their Brooklyn beginnings, the family decided to rename the street where their new factory sits. They called it "1 Brooklyn Road." Even the former Brooklyn Borough president, Howard Golden, spoke about the move. He said that Gold's was a very important part of Brooklyn's history. He added that their famous horseradish would always be a Brooklyn tradition.
Family Ownership and Horseradish Production
As of 1992, the company was run by Morris's children, Marc and Steve, and Herbert's children, Neil and Howard. Steven's daughter, Melissa, joined the company in 2002. This means Gold's has been a family business for four generations!
Gold's factory is home to the largest root cellar in the world. A root cellar is a cool, dark place used to store vegetables. A newspaper called Crain's New York Business said that Gold's is the biggest company making processed horseradish in the country. They make more horseradish at their factory than any other company.
In the mid-1990s, the New York Mets baseball team started using Gold's mustard at their food stands.
Changes in Ownership
In 2015, the Gold family sold most of the company to La Salle Capital. This is a private investment company from Chicago. Marc Gold explained that the family wanted to make the factory better and expand the "Gold" name. He felt they could not do this alone and believed La Salle Capital could help the company grow even more. In 2021, La Salle Capital announced that the Gold's manufacturing location in Hempstead would close. However, the production of Gold's products continued at other locations.
Gold's Brands
Gold's manufactures products under several different brands.
Nathan's Famous Mustard
In 1996, Gold Pure Food Products Co., Inc. made a deal with Nathan's Famous. This agreement allowed Gold's to make and sell Nathan's Famous brand mustard and other condiments in stores across the United States.
Baker Brands Mustard
In 1993, Gold's decided to buy Baker Brands Mustard Co. This company, located in Manhattan, also made vinegar. Marc Gold, a grandson of the founder, said that they wanted to sell more products. He explained that mustard was a good product to add because it is often used with horseradish. Mustard is especially popular in summer for salads and barbecues. So, they bought Baker Brands Mustard in 1993.
