Golden Grove's Story

How Golden Grove Got Its Name

The story of Golden Grove began in September 1839. That's when Captain Adam Robertson and his wife arrived in South Australia. They decided to settle in the area we now call Golden Grove.

In 1853, Captain Robertson gave a piece of his land to the community. This land was used to build a school. He suggested naming the area "Golden Grove" after the last ship he commanded. Even though he later tried to stop the postal service from using the name, it stuck!

Growing into a Community

For many years, the land in Golden Grove was used for farming. In 1972, a big part of the area was bought by a company that mined sand.

Then, in 1973, the South Australian Land Commission started buying land. Their goal was to create new housing areas in Golden Grove and Wynn Vale.

A company called Lend Lease began developing the land in 1983. Construction of new homes started in 1985. Many people wanted to live here, and over 200 building plots were sold in the very first week! The last plots were sold in 2002.

The Settlement Estate

More land became available in Golden Grove in 2007. This new area is known as 'The Settlement' estate. It's special because it's built on the original land owned by Captain Adam Robertson. You can even find his old homestead still standing there today! This estate includes new homes, a small shopping area, and places for older people to live.

You can also find places to eat, specialty stores, and banks here. A police station was opened in the suburb in 2006, helping to keep the community safe.

Bus Services

Golden Grove has a bus interchange at The Grove Village. This is a central spot where many Adelaide Metro buses stop. These buses help people travel to and from the Adelaide city centre and other nearby suburbs.

In 2020, the state government invested $33 million to build a new Park & Ride facility in Golden Grove. This facility, which opened in 2022, makes it easier for bus commuters to park their cars and catch a bus. It connects to the Adelaide O'Bahn bus corridor, which is a special busway that helps buses travel faster. There are even ideas to extend the O'Bahn further into Golden Grove in the future!
