About Her Life
Gong Jiyeong loved literature from a young age. When she was a teenager, she even published her own stories and poems.
During her college years in the 1980s, she became involved in student movements. These experiences helped her find her purpose in life. In 1985, she earned her degree in Literature from Yonsei University. Her first novel, Rising Dawn, was inspired by her involvement in these student and worker movements. Her early books tell the stories of young people who grew up during a time of big social changes in South Korea.
Her Writing Career
Gong Jiyeong started writing full-time in 1988. Her books often focus on people who are not treated fairly. This includes workers, people who are less fortunate, and those who face discrimination. She also writes a lot about young, educated women trying to build their lives.
Many people see Gong Jiyeong as a writer who supports women's rights. In her stories, women often face challenges in a society where men have more power. Her characters try to find their place in the world after big social changes. They learn to live ordinary lives, even if it's different from what they expected.
Gong Jiyeong also cares deeply about gender equality. She often points out that even though the law says everyone is equal, it's not always true in real life. Her 1993 novel, Go Alone Like the Horn of a Rhinoceros, talks directly about women's issues. This book was even made into a movie in 1995 and a play.
In the late 1990s, Gong Jiyeong continued to write about women and workers. She also started writing about other groups who were treated unfairly in Korean society. In her 1998 novel, My Sister Bongsoon, she showed what life was like for a woman in the 1960s.
Her bestselling novel, Our Happy Time, explored the topic of the death penalty. In her book Home of Happiness, she wrote about what it's like for a family after a divorce. Her novel The Crucible brought attention to serious issues of abuse and violence against people with disabilities in Korean society.
Our Happy Time was made into a film called Maundy Thursday. The movie was very popular when it came out in September 2006. It helped the book become a bestseller for eight weeks in a row.
Gong Jiyeong was one of the first Korean writers to use the internet for her work. She first shared her novel The Crucible on a Korean website called Daum in November 2008. She left it online for six months. This way of publishing stories in parts is common in South Korea, but it usually happens in newspapers.
Her 2009 novel The Crucible had a huge impact on Korean society and laws. When the movie based on the book became a big hit in 2011, it led to important changes. New laws were made to better protect people with disabilities. Gong Jiyeong is also very active on Twitter, where she has many followers. She uses her social media to talk about important social issues and share her opinions.
