Early Life and Beginnings
Goo Ha-ra was born in Gwangju, South Korea, on January 3, 1991. Even before she became famous, she was already trying to enter the entertainment world.
In 2005, she took part in a youth competition held by SM Entertainment. Two years later, in 2007, she auditioned for JYP Entertainment. She did not win that audition.
Before joining Kara, Goo Ha-ra also worked as a model for an online shopping mall. Her photos were noticed by DSP Entertainment, which led to her joining the group. She even put off going to university to focus on her singing career.
Career Highlights
Joining Kara
The girl group Kara first started in March 2007. In 2008, one member left the group. DSP Entertainment then brought in two new members: Goo Ha-ra and Kang Ji-young.
With the new members, Kara made a comeback with their song "Rock U". This song helped them change their image from "Hip-hop" to a more "cute and playful" style.
Kara's Success
On December 4, 2008, Kara began promoting their song "Pretty Girl". In February 2009, they released their second mini-album, "Honey". "Honey" became a huge hit for the group. It was their very first song to reach number one on music shows like M! Countdown and The Music Trend.
Later in July 2009, Kara released their second full album, "Revolution". Songs like "Wanna" and "Mister" became very popular. This helped Kara become even more famous. After that, they promoted their third mini-album, "Lupin".
Solo Activities and TV Shows
Besides singing with Kara, Goo Ha-ra also took on other projects. In late 2008, she appeared in an episode of an MBC sitcom called That Person is Coming. She played a noticeable role as a female gang leader.
She also joined a show called Hunters on MBC. On this show, she worked with other stars to help catch wild boars. These animals had become a problem for people and farms. The show's format later changed to Eco House.
In October 2009, Goo Ha-ra became a cast member on the KBS reality show Invincible Youth. In January 2015, she became a co-host for another KBS show, A Style For You, alongside Hani.
