History

1997–1999: How it started and early K-pop artists

JYP Entertainment was founded in 1997 by a South Korean singer and songwriter named Park Jin-young. The company was first called Tae-Hong Planning Corporation. In 2001, it changed its name to JYP Entertainment, named after J. Y. Park's stage name. In 1997, the company signed its first artist, a female singer named Pearl.

In 1999, another entertainment company, SidusHQ, introduced the future members of the boy band g.o.d to Park. He became their producer and mentor. JYP helped create g.o.d, and they debuted on January 13, 1999. Even though SidusHQ managed the group, J. Y. Park produced their first album, Chapter 1.

2000–2009: First big successes and second generation K-pop artists

In December 2000, JYP signed Rain as a trainee. He debuted two years later in May 2002. Rain became very successful in Asia and beyond. His third album, It's Raining, sold over 1 million copies in seven Asian countries.

On December 27, 2002, JYP debuted its first boy group, Noel. They were a four-member vocal group. In May 2006, JYP formed its first girl group, Wonder Girls. They became very popular and were the first South Korean group to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2009. Their song "Nobody" reached No. 76 on the chart. This success led to a deal with the Jonas Group, allowing Wonder Girls to open for the Jonas Brothers' world tour in some cities.

In 2007, Rain left JYP to start his own company, J. Tune Entertainment. However, he said he would still work with J. Y. Park.

In 2008, a TV show called Hot Blood Men was created. It had two teams of male trainees competing to debut. The winning group, One Day, was later split into two boy bands: 2PM and 2AM. Both groups debuted that same year. JYP also opened its China branch, JYP Beijing Center, in October.

JYP also started getting into producing TV dramas. In June 2009, they teamed up with KEYEAST Entertainment to create Holym, a TV drama production company. Holym later announced its first big TV drama, Dream High, in 2010.

2010–2017: New partnerships and third generation K-pop artists

In March 2010, JYP worked with other big companies like SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment to create KMP Holdings. This company officially distributed music from these labels. In December 2010, JYP became the biggest owner of J. Tune Entertainment. A new company called AQ Entertainment was formed, and it introduced the Chinese-Korean girl group Miss A.

In June 2013, JYP Entertainment merged with another company also called JYP. This made them one big company. Artists from both companies, like 2PM, Wonder Girls, J. Y. Park, and Miss A, all became part of the new JYP Entertainment. In January 2014, Got7, a new boy group, debuted. They were the first boy group from JYP since 2PM and 2AM in 2008.

Twice at Golden Disk Awards on January 5, 2019
The success of Twice helped JYP Entertainment become a top South Korean entertainment company.

In January 2015, a new sub-label called Studio J was created. It aimed to support unique artists who make original music. The first artist under Studio J was G. Soul. In 2015, two new groups were formed by JYP: the rock band Day6 (debuted September 7) and the girl group Twice (debuted October 20). The members of Twice were chosen from a TV show called Sixteen.

JYP also expanded into the Chinese market. In 2016, they partnered with Tencent Music Entertainment to create Beijing Xin Sheng Entertainment Co. Ltd. This company helped debut the Chinese boy band Boy Story. In July 2017, JYP bought a new building in Seoul to use as its main office.

JYP also announced plans to create a Japanese girl group, which was part of their "Globalization By Localization" plan. This project was called Nizi Project, a survival show that aired in 2020. The final group, NiziU, debuted on December 2, 2020, and partnered with Sony Music Japan.

In March 2019, JYP partnered with The Orchard (a Sony Music Entertainment company). This partnership helps JYP distribute its music around the world, especially in the US and Europe. In June 2019, JYP and Make-A-Wish Korea started a partnership to help children with serious illnesses. This is part of JYP's "Every Dream Matters!" (EDM) campaign.
