Park Jin-young (born December 13, 1971) is a famous South Korean singer, songwriter, and music producer. He is also known by his stage names J. Y. Park and The Asiansoul, or just JYP. He became a star in 1994 with his first album, Blue City.

In 1997, he started his own company, JYP Entertainment. It has become one of the biggest and most successful entertainment companies in South Korea. As the head of JYP Entertainment, Park has helped create and manage many popular K-pop groups. These include Wonder Girls, 2PM, Miss A, Got7, Day6, Twice, Stray Kids, Itzy, and Nmixx. He has also launched groups in other countries, like Boy Story in China and NiziU in Japan.

Early Life and School

Park Jin-young was born in Seoul, South Korea. When he was nine, he moved to New York City with his mother because of his father's job as a news correspondent. After living in the U.S. for three years, he returned to Seoul for high school.

He went to Yonsei University and studied geology. While he was in college, he released his first two music albums. He graduated in 1996. Park also studied how to write and produce music for two years with Kim Hyung-suk, a very famous composer in South Korea.

Music and Production Career

Getting Started

Park first started in a trio boy group called "Park Jin Young and the NG (New Generation)," but their first album was not a big success. He became famous in 1994 when he started his solo career. His song "Don't Leave Me" from the album Blue City was a huge hit.

In 1997, Park started his own company, which is now known as JYP Entertainment. He also helped create the boy band g.o.d, which became one of the most popular K-pop groups in the early 2000s. This success helped people see Park as a "hit maker" who could create popular songs and artists.

Working in America

In 2004, Park began working in the American music industry. He was one of the first Asian producers to become successful in the U.S. He produced music for American artists like Will Smith, Mase, and Cassie.

In 2009, a song he wrote for the Wonder Girls called "Nobody" became a big hit. It was the first song by a Korean artist to enter the famous Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States.

Hit Songs and Collaborations

Over the years, Park has released many of his own hit songs. In 2011, he worked with Ga-In from the group Brown Eyed Girls on the song "Someone Else." A year later, he released another popular single, "You're the One."

In 2015, his song "Who's Your Mama?" featuring rapper Jessi became a number-one hit in Korea. He also appeared on popular TV shows like Infinite Challenge and Sister's Slam Dunk, where he produced hit songs for the cast members.

In 2020, he released the song "When We Disco" with Sunmi, a former member of the Wonder Girls. The song was very popular and reached the top 3 on the music charts in South Korea.

Acting and TV Shows

Besides music, Park has also tried acting. In 2011, he acted in the TV drama Dream High and its sequel, Dream High 2. He played a music teacher named Yang Jin-man. He also had a main role in the 2012 movie A Millionaire on the Run.

Park is well-known as a judge on TV talent shows. He was a judge on K-pop Star for six seasons. He has also created his own competition shows to form new K-pop groups, such as Sixteen (which created Twice), Stray Kids, and Nizi Project (which created NiziU).

Personal Life

In 1999, Park married Seo Yoon-jeong. They announced their divorce in 2009. In 2013, he married again. He has two daughters.

In 2019, he wrote a song called "This Small Hand" for his newborn daughter and his father. The music video showed that his father had Alzheimer's disease and could not recognize him anymore. All the money earned from the song was given to a charity to help children in need.

Lawsuit Over a Song

In 2011, a songwriter named Kim Sin-il sued Park. Kim claimed that the song "Someday," which Park wrote for the singer IU, was a copy of one of his songs. This is called plagiarism.

A court first agreed with Kim. However, Park appealed the decision. In 2015, the highest court in South Korea decided that Park had not plagiarized the song. The court found that the melody was very common and had been used in other songs before, such as "Hosanna" by Kirk Franklin.

Charity Work

Park Jin-young is known for being generous. In December 2022, he donated 500 million won (about $400,000 USD) to Samsung Seoul Hospital and another 500 million won to World Vision, a charity that helps people around the world.

In December 2023, he gave 200 million won to five different hospitals in South Korea. The money was used to help pay for medical treatment for children from low-income families.
