Twice (Hangul: 트와이스; Japanese: トゥワイス), often written as TWICE, is a super popular South Korean girl group. They were formed by JYP Entertainment. The group has nine talented members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. Twice was created through a TV show called Sixteen in 2015. They officially started their music journey on October 20, 2015, with their first mini-album, The Story Begins.

Twice became famous in South Korea in 2016 with their song "Cheer Up". This song went straight to number one on the music charts and was the top song of the year! It even won "Song of the Year" at big awards shows like the Melon Music Awards and Mnet Asian Music Awards. Their next hit, "TT", from their third mini-album Twicecoaster: Lane 1, stayed at the top of the charts for four weeks. This mini-album was the best-selling Korean girl group album of 2016. In less than two years after their debut, Twice had already sold over 1.2 million albums! By December 2020, they had sold more than 10 million albums in South Korea and Japan combined.

The group also became very popular in Japan. They debuted there on June 28, 2017, with an album called #Twice. This album quickly reached number 2 on the Japanese charts. It had the highest first-week sales for a K-pop artist in Japan in two years! Later, their first original Japanese song, "One More Time", came out in October. Twice made history by becoming the first Korean girl group to get a platinum award from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for both an album and a single in the same year. In 2019, they were the first Korean girl group to go on a special "dome tour" in Japan, performing in huge stadiums.

Twice has also found success around the world. They were the first female Korean group to top both the Billboard World Albums and World Digital Song Sales charts at the same time in 2017 with their album Twicetagram and its main song "Likey". In 2019, their song "Feel Special" helped them become the third female Korean group to appear on the Canadian Hot 100 chart. After partnering with Republic Records for promotions in the United States, their albums More & More and Eyes Wide Open made it onto the Billboard 200 chart in 2020. Twice is often called the "Nation's Girl Group" in Korea. Their unique dance moves, like those for "Cheer Up" (2016), "TT" (2016), and "Signal" (2017), became super popular dance crazes and viral memes that many celebrities copied!

How Twice Started

Park Jin-young (Founder of JYP Entertainment) in February 2011 from acrofan
JYPE founder J. Y. Park helped create the group's name.

In December 2013, JYP Entertainment (JYPE) announced they would launch a new girl group. This would be their first female group since Miss A debuted in 2010. There were plans for a group called 6MIX, but it didn't happen.

Then, in February 2015, J. Y. Park, the head of JYPE, shared a new plan. The members of the new seven-member girl group would be chosen through a TV competition show. This show was called Sixteen and aired on Mnet. The show ran from May to July. At the end, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung were chosen.

But J. Y. Park decided to make the group bigger. He added two more members: Tzuyu, who was very popular with the audience, and Momo, who he felt had amazing dance skills. This decision was a bit surprising at the time. Park chose the name "Twice" because he wanted the group to "touch people's hearts twice: once through the ears, and once again through the eyes." Fans of Twice are called "Once." The members once said, "If you love us even once, we will repay your love with twice of our love."

Twice officially debuted on October 20, 2015. They released their first mini-album, The Story Begins, and its main song "Like Ooh-Ahh". They also held a live show to promote it. At first, the song had a slow start on the music charts. But people started talking about Twice's performances. "Like Ooh-Ahh" then climbed into the top 10 on many Korean music charts. This was unusual for a new group! The music video for "Like Ooh-Ahh" reached 50 million views on YouTube in just five months. It became one of the most-watched debut music videos for any K-pop group. Twice won the "Best New Female Artist" award at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards in December.

In January 2016, Twice's first mini-album, The Story Begins, entered the Billboard World Albums Chart. This was their first time on an international chart!

On April 25, 2016, Twice released their second mini-album, Page Two. It featured their hit song "Cheer Up". This album was a huge success. It sold over 80,000 copies in April alone. Page Two had the highest first-week sales for a Korean girl group that year. By August, it had sold over 150,000 copies. "Cheer Up" became Twice's first song to reach number 1 in South Korea. The "shy shy shy" part sung by Sana became a viral trend! "Cheer Up" was the best-performing song in South Korea for all of 2016. It also did well internationally, reaching number three on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

Twice won their first music show award for "Cheer Up" on May 5, 2016. This was exactly one year after the Sixteen show started. They also performed in the United States for the first time at the KCON music festival in Los Angeles.

To celebrate their first anniversary on October 20, Twice shared a new song, "One in a Million." Their third mini-album, Twicecoaster: Lane 1, and the music video for "TT" came out on October 24. This album sold over 165,000 copies in Korea in just one week. It became the best-selling K-pop girl group album of 2016. "TT" was number one on the Gaon Digital Chart for four weeks. It was also one of the best songs of 2016. The "TT" music video was the first by a K-pop female group to reach 200 million views!

In November 2016, "Like Ooh-Ahh" reached 100 million views on YouTube. Twice was the fourth K-pop girl group to do this. They were also the first K-pop group to reach this milestone with a debut music video. "Cheer Up" won Song of the Year at the Melon Music Awards and Mnet Asian Music Awards.

In October, they released their first Japanese single, "One More Time". It sold over 130,000 copies in just two days! This made it the fastest-selling release for any South Korean girl group in Japan. Both #Twice and "One More Time" earned platinum awards in Japan. This made Twice the first Korean girl group to get platinum for both a single and an album in the same year.

Twice released their first full-length Korean album, Twicetagram, on October 30, 2017. Its main song was "Likey". The music video for "Likey" was filmed in Canada. This album and "Likey" both reached number one on Billboard's World Albums and World Digital Song Sales charts. This was a first for a female K-pop group! They also released a Christmas-themed album, Merry & Happy, with the song "Heart Shaker" in December.

Twice's success in Japan led them to rank third in Billboard Japan's 2017 Year-End Rankings. They also performed at 68th Kōhaku Uta Gassen, a famous year-end music show in Japan. This was the first time a Korean artist appeared on the show since 2011.

It also set a record for the highest sales volume for a girl group in Gaon Chart history. The mini-album debuted at number 200 on the Billboard 200. This made Twice the fifth South Korean girl group to enter this chart. Twice also appeared on the Billboard Artist 100 chart for the first time. In April, a documentary series called Twice: Seize the Light premiered on YouTube Originals. It showed the members' journey from trainees to their first world tour.

Twice's Music Style

Twice is known for their 'cute' and bright music style, often called "bubblegum pop." This was different from the older, retro style of groups like Wonder Girls and Miss A. Twice developed a special "color pop" sound. It mixes rock, R&B, and hip hop with catchy parts called "hooks". Their music is cheerful, and their fashion is colorful.

While they started with a youthful image, Twice has also shown a more mature style. This was first seen with "Fancy" and "Breakthrough". "Fancy" had more grown-up dance moves, and "Breakthrough" had a strong electro-pop sound. They have also tried different music styles like EDM, synth-pop, and retro soul in their mini-album Feel Special. In More & More, they explored tropical house, Latin pop, and new jack swing. For their second Korean album Eyes Wide Open, they used retro-synth, dance-pop, Japanese city-pop, and contemporary R&B.

Twice also likes to use modern online culture in their songs and music videos. For example, their 2016 song "TT" is named after the crying emoji, and they even copied the emoji in their dance! Their 2017 song "Likey" talks about Instagram culture and trying to look perfect online. In the music video for their 2018 song "What Is Love?", they recreated scenes from famous movies like The Princess Diaries, Ghost, and La La Land.
