Life and Career
Becoming a Star
Chaeyoung was born in Seoul, South Korea, on April 23, 1999. From a young age, she was interested in performing and even modeled for a kids' magazine.
Chaeyoung knew she wanted to be a singer, so she took dance lessons for over a year. When she was 13, she auditioned for the entertainment company JYP Entertainment and was accepted as a trainee. While training, she appeared in music videos for other famous groups like Got7 and Miss A.
Joining Twice and Solo Music
In 2015, Chaeyoung competed on a TV show called Sixteen. The show's goal was to create a new girl group. Chaeyoung was one of the nine winners who got to join the new group, Twice. In the group, she is one of the main rappers and also a singer. Twice officially debuted on October 20, 2015, with their first mini-album, The Story Begins.
Chaeyoung is also a talented songwriter. In 2016, she became the first member of Twice to get credit for writing lyrics. She wrote a rap part for the song "Precious Love" on their album Page Two. Since then, she has written lyrics for many of Twice's songs. She also designed a special version of the Page Two album cover.
For the group's Japanese album &Twice, Chaeyoung composed music for the first time for the song "How U Doin'". This made her the first member of Twice to ever compose a song for the group.
Besides her work with Twice, Chaeyoung has released her own music. She has recorded covers of songs like "Alone" by Cheeze and "Off My Face" by Justin Bieber. In 2022, she started learning to play the guitar. She later performed an original song she wrote, called "My Guitar," during Twice's Ready to Be World Tour. In October 2023, she worked with the pop duo Coco & Clair Clair on a new version of their song "Pop Star."
On June 10, 2025, JYP Entertainment announced that Chaeyoung was getting ready to release her first solo album.
Brand Endorsements
Because of her popularity, Chaeyoung has worked with famous brands. In September 2023, she became a brand ambassador for the Italian fashion company Etro in Japan. A brand ambassador helps promote a company's products.
In November 2023, she was also chosen as the "brand muse" for CipiCipi, a Japanese makeup brand. A muse is someone who inspires a brand's style and image.
Personal Life
Chaeyoung went to Hanlim Multi Art School with her fellow Twice member Tzuyu. They both graduated in 2019.
In 2020, Chaeyoung's private phone number was shared online without her permission. Her company, JYP Entertainment, made a statement about protecting her privacy. Chaeyoung also spoke about it directly to her fans.
On April 5, 2024, JYP Entertainment shared that Chaeyoung is in a relationship with the rapper Zion.T.
Wearing Controversial Shirts
In March 2023, Chaeyoung wore two different T-shirts that caused controversy. One shirt had a symbol connected to a political group, and another had a historical symbol that is seen as very offensive.
After posting a photo of herself in the second shirt, Chaeyoung took the picture down and wrote an apology. She explained that she did not understand the negative meaning of the symbol on the shirt. Her company, JYP Entertainment, also apologized for not checking the shirt's design more carefully.
