Story of Good Boy!
Owen Baker (Liam Aiken) is a 12-year-old boy. He works hard as the neighborhood dog-walker. He wants to earn enough to get his own dog. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Baker (Kevin Nealon and Molly Shannon), finally let him adopt a dog. It's a scruffy Border Terrier that Owen names Hubble.
Owen's family moves a lot because his parents renovate and resell houses. This means Owen doesn't have much time to make friends. He hopes Hubble will become his very best friend. Owen does have a friend named Connie Flemming (Brittany Moldowan). She lives in his neighborhood. But he also gets picked on by two boys, Frankie (Hunter Elliott) and Fred (Mikhael Speidel).
Soon after Owen adopts Hubble, he learns something amazing. His new dog is super smart and actually came from outer space! The next morning, Owen wakes up and can understand everything Hubble says. Hubble even says, "Take me to your leaders."
Hubble's Secret Mission
Owen learns that dogs came to Earth thousands of years ago. Their plan was to take over the planet. Hubble, whose real name is Canid 3942, was sent on a special mission. He came from the Dog Star Sirius 7. The powerful Greater Dane (voiced by Vanessa Redgrave) sent him. Hubble's job is to check if Earth's dogs have taken over, as planned.
The dogs Owen walks are all very different. There's Barbara Ann (voiced by Delta Burke), a fancy Poodle. Wilson (voiced by Donald Faison) is a wild Boxer. Nelly (voiced by Brittany Murphy) is a nervous Italian Greyhound. And Connie's dog, Shep (voiced by Carl Reiner), is a gassy Bernese Mountain Dog.
Owen and these neighborhood dogs try their best to trick Hubble. They want him to believe that everything is fine with Earth's dogs. But Hubble soon finds out the truth. Earth dogs are not rulers; they are just pets! Things get even worse when Hubble learns the Greater Dane is coming to Earth. She wants to inspect things herself. If she doesn't like what she sees, all dogs on Earth will be called back to Sirius.
Saving Earth's Dogs
Owen and Hubble must work together. They need to get the neighborhood dogs ready for the Greater Dane's visit. She is coming with her Chinese Crested Dog henchman (voiced by Cheech Marin). Owen, Hubble, Connie, and their dog friends try to train the other dogs. They want them to act like rulers, not pets.
But Owen's efforts don't work. The Greater Dane decides to call all dogs back from Earth. Owen is very upset. He fixes Hubble's special communicator. He sends Hubble a message telling him how much he loves him. The Greater Dane hears this message. She is curious about it. She asks Hubble why Earth dogs are loyal to humans instead of ruling them.
Hubble explains that dogs and humans have formed a strong bond of love and loyalty. When asked where his own loyalty lies, Hubble asks the Greater Dane to call him Hubble, not Canid 3942. This shows his loyalty to Owen. Because of this, the Greater Dane sends the Earth dogs back. She declares them a separate species. Hubble is allowed to return too. But there's one condition: he must remove Owen's ability to talk to dogs. Owen's parents decide to stay in town for once. Hubble starts to fit in as a regular Earth dog.
