Gooise Meren is a municipality in the Netherlands. It is located in the province of North Holland. This area is home to about 58,000 people. It covers an area of about 77 square kilometers.

Gooise Meren was created in 2016. It was formed by joining three older municipalities. These were Bussum, Muiden (which included Muiderberg), and Naarden.

About Gooise Meren

Gooise Meren is a newer municipality in the Netherlands. It was formed on January 1, 2016. This happened when three smaller towns decided to join together. These towns were Bussum, Muiden, and Naarden.

Location and Geography

The eastern and southern parts of Gooise Meren are in the Gooi region. The western part, near Muiden, is in the Vechtstreek region. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes.

Inside Gooise Meren, you can find some interesting natural spots. The northern part of the Utrecht Hill Ridge is here. There is also a lake called Naardermeer. It is a special nature reserve. You can also find the artificial island of Pampus. This island has an old fort on it.

Gooise Meren is bordered by two large lakes. To the northwest is IJmeer. To the northeast is Gooimeer. The Vecht river flows into the IJmeer near Muiden. Muiden is also where the old Hollandic Water Line used to end. This was a line of defense made of water.

Many interesting people have come from or lived in Gooise Meren. They have made their mark in different fields.

Artists and Writers

  • Salomon van Ruysdael (around 1602 – 1670) was a famous landscape painter. He lived during the Dutch Golden Age.
  • Frederik van Eeden (1860 – 1932) was a Dutch writer and psychiatrist. He wrote many books and poems.
  • Willem Arondeus (1894 – 1943) was an artist and author. He bravely joined the Dutch resistance during World War II.
  • Paul Biegel (1925 – 2006) was a very productive writer. He wrote many popular children's books.
  • Tessa de Loo (born 1946) is a well-known Dutch novelist. She writes short stories and novels.
  • Thekla Reuten (born 1975) is a Dutch actress. She has appeared in many films and TV shows.

  • Tineke Lagerberg (born 1941) is a retired Dutch swimmer. She won a bronze medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics.
  • Ruud Hesp (born 1965) was a professional football goalkeeper. He played in over 500 club games.
  • Tim and Tom Coronel (born 1972) are twin brothers. They are both famous Dutch racing drivers.
  • Marlous Pieëte (born 1989) is a retired international footballer. She played for the Dutch national team.
  • Ferry Weertman (born 1992) is a long-distance swimmer. He won a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
  • Robin van Kampen (born 1994) is a Dutch chess grandmaster. This means he is one of the best chess players in the world.
