Gordon John Van Wylen (born February 6, 1920 – died November 5, 2020) was an American engineer, teacher, and college leader. He was well-known for writing textbooks about thermodynamics. He also served as the president of Hope College from 1972 to 1987.
Early Life and Education
Gordon Van Wylen was born in Grant, Michigan. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
He earned his first degree from Calvin College. Later, he received a master's degree from the University of Michigan. He then completed his doctorate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Work and Beliefs
In 1959, Van Wylen published an important textbook called Thermodynamics. In this book, he talked about the second law of thermodynamics. This law explains how energy tends to spread out and become less organized over time. He wrote that this law made him believe in "a Creator." He felt that the universe must have started in a very organized state. This made him think there was a Creator who had a plan for the future.
From 1969 to 1972, he led the Engineering Department at the University of Michigan.
Leading Hope College
In 1972, Gordon Van Wylen became the president of Hope College. This college is located in Holland, Michigan. He served as president until he retired in 1987.
Later Life
Gordon Van Wylen passed away in Holland, Michigan, on November 5, 2020. He was 100 years old. He died from problems related to COVID-19.
