Gordonbrook's Landscape

Gordonbrook is mostly made up of land used for grazing animals like cows. The Stuart River flows through the area. There's also a large artificial lake called Lake Gordonbrook, which was created by damming the river.

Most of Gordonbrook is covered by bushland and grazing areas, with only a small amount of land developed. Reedy Creek is another important waterway that flows into the Stuart River.

A Look Back at Gordonbrook's History

Soldier Settlements After World War I

After World War I, in the 1920s, Gordonbrook became a place for 'soldier settlements'. This meant that land was offered to soldiers who had returned from the war. The idea was to help them start new lives as farmers.

Many of these settlers tried dairying, which is farming for milk. While some stayed, not all of them did, but these settlements helped the area grow.

Early Schools in Gordonbrook

Gordon Brook Provisional School first opened its doors in 1924. A few years later, in 1928, Gordon Brook South Provisional School also opened. For a while, one teacher would teach at both schools on different days.

Gordon Brook Provisional School closed in 1929, and Gordon Brook South Provisional School became a full-time school. It was renamed Gordon Brook South State School in 1938 but eventually closed in 1945.

Building the Gordonbrook Dam

The Gordonbrook Dam was built in 1941. Its main purpose was to provide a reliable water supply for the town of Kingaroy. It also supplied water to the R.A.A.F. Kingaroy air force base during World War II.

In 1986, the dam was made bigger. Its wall and spillway were raised by two metres to hold even more water.

Local Government Changes

Gordonbrook used to be part of the Shire of Kingaroy. However, in March 2008, local government areas were changed. Gordonbrook then became part of the larger South Burnett Region.
