Ghana was once led by a military government. But in 1992, things changed. Ghana allowed its citizens to vote for their leaders.
In 1993, Ghana became a parliamentary democracy. This means people elect representatives to make laws. This new system is called the Fourth Republic. The country's rules, found in the 1992 constitution, share power among different groups. These include a president, a parliament, a cabinet, a council of state, and a national court.
Everyone in Ghana can vote. It doesn't matter what their gender, race, or background is.
How Ghana is Governed
Political parties became legal in Ghana in 1992. Today, there are 20 political parties. The two biggest parties are the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party.
The National Democratic Congress won elections in 1992, 1996, 2008, and 2012. The New Patriotic Party won elections in 2000, 2004, and 2016.
