Graham William Walker (born 4 April 1963), known as Graham Norton, is a famous Irish comedian, TV host, actor, and writer. He is well-known for his work on British television.

Graham has won many awards, including five BAFTA TV Awards for his popular chat show, The Graham Norton Show, which started in 2007. He also won the British Academy Television Award for Best Entertainment Performance three times for his earlier show, So Graham Norton. People know him for his funny and lively way of presenting.

Before becoming a TV star, Graham started as a stand-up comedian. He became more famous for playing Father Noel Furlong in the TV show Father Ted from 1996 to 1998. He has also hosted radio shows on BBC Radio 2 and Virgin Radio UK. Since 2009, Graham has been the main TV commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest for the BBC. In 2019, he became a judge on the reality show RuPaul's Drag Race UK.

Graham Norton's Early Life and School

Graham William Walker was born on 4 April 1963, in Clondalkin, County Dublin, Ireland. His dad, William "Billy" Walker, worked for Guinness, and his mom was Rhoda Walker. He has an older sister named Paula.

Because of his dad's job, Graham's family moved around Ireland a lot when he was young. They lived in places like Tramore, Waterford, and Kilkenny. They finally settled in Bandon, County Cork, where he grew up.

Graham was raised in a Church of Ireland family. He has shared that he felt a bit different growing up as a Protestant in the mostly Catholic south of Ireland. His dad's family came from County Wicklow, and his mom was from Belfast. Later, he found out his dad's family came from England in 1713.

Graham went to Bandon Grammar School in County Cork. After that, he studied English and French at University College Cork for two years in the 1980s. He didn't finish his studies there. In 2013, the university gave him an honorary degree.

In 1981, Graham appeared on an Irish TV show called Youngline. He was part of a discussion about teenagers going to discos. In 1983, he lived in San Francisco for a year. He stayed in a "Stardance" hippie house and worked as a waiter.

In the late 1980s, Graham moved to London to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He worked as a waiter again during this time. When he joined the actors' union, Equity, he chose "Norton" as his stage name. This was his great-grandmother's maiden name, and there was already another actor named Graham Walker.

Graham Norton's Career Journey

Starting Out in TV

In 1992, Graham Norton became known for his stand-up comedy act. He dressed as a tea-towel-clad Mother Teresa of Calcutta at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This even made the news when a TV channel mistakenly thought he was representing the real Mother Teresa.

His first TV appearances were in the UK. He was a regular comedian on the BBC Radio 4 show Loose Ends in the early 1990s.

Graham was one of the first big stars on Channel 5. He won an award for filling in as a host on a late-night talk show. He then hosted a funny quiz show called Bring Me the Head of Light Entertainment. This show helped him become more famous as a comedian and host. In 1996, he also co-hosted a late-night quiz show called Carnal Knowledge on ITV.

From 1996 to 1998, Graham played Father Noel Furlong in three episodes of the Channel 4 show Father Ted. This show was set on a made-up island off Ireland. Father Furlong was often in charge of the St Luke's Youth Group.

After this, Graham moved to Channel 4 in 1998. He hosted his own chat shows, like the weekly So Graham Norton (1998–2002). Then came the daily show V Graham Norton (2002–03). In 2003, The Observer newspaper called him one of the 1,000 funniest acts in British comedy. In 2004, Radio Times named him the most powerful person in TV comedy.

In 2004, Graham also tried American television. His show, The Graham Norton Effect, started on Comedy Central. It was also shown in the UK on BBC Three.
