Early Life
Graham William Walker was born on 4 April 1963, in Clondalkin, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. His father, Billy, worked for the famous Guinness company, and his mother's name was Rhoda. He has an older sister named Paula. Because of his dad's job, his family moved several times, living in towns like Waterford and Kilkenny before settling in Bandon, County Cork.
Norton grew up in a Church of Ireland family. He later found out through the TV show Who Do You Think You Are? that some of his ancestors were from Yorkshire, England, and moved to Ireland in 1713.
He went to Bandon Grammar School and later studied English and French at University College Cork. In 2013, the university gave him an honorary doctorate to celebrate his success. In the late 1980s, he moved to London to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama. When he joined the actors' union, he had to change his last name because there was already an actor named Graham Walker. He chose "Norton," which was his great-grandmother's maiden name.
Career in Television and Radio
First Steps on TV
In 1992, Norton performed a comedy act at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe that got him noticed. His first big break on TV was as a regular comedian on the BBC Radio 4 show Loose Ends.
