A Look Back: History of Grand Pass

Grand Pass got its name from an old path called the Great Osage Trail. This important trail used to go right through the area where the village is now.

During World War II in 1943, something interesting happened. Many American men were away fighting in the war. This meant there weren't enough people to work on farms and in factories back home. To help with this problem, German and Italian prisoners of war were brought to places like Missouri and other states in the Midwest. One of the places where these prisoners helped with labor was a branch camp set up in Grand Pass.

Today, you can find special historical places near Grand Pass. The Gumbo Point Archeological Site and parts of the Santa Fe Trail-Grand Pass Trail Segments are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites that are protected.
