Where is Grand Rivers Located?
Grand Rivers is located in Kentucky. It covers about 1.9 square miles (5.1 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
The city is special because it sits on a narrow piece of land. This land is between two large artificial lakes: Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. These lakes were created by damming the Cumberland River and the Tennessee River many years ago.
The Story of Grand Rivers
Grand Rivers has had a few different names over time. It might have first been called Narrows because it was located at a very thin point between the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers.
- In 1879, a local post office opened and was named Otisville.
- In 1882, the name changed to Bernard.
- The next year, in 1883, it changed again to Nickells. This new name came from a nearby Illinois Central train station.
The community officially became a city in 1890 and was named Grand Rivers. A businessman named Thomas W. Lawson wanted to turn the area into a major steel-making center. He hoped it would be as big as cities like Pittsburgh. However, his plan did not work out.
The name "Grand Rivers" refers to the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers. These rivers used to meet close to the city before the lakes were formed. The Tennessee River also joins the Ohio River about 40 miles from Grand Rivers.
