The Story of Granny Goose
How it Started
Granny Goose Foods, Inc. began in Oakland, California, way back in 1946. It was started by a person named Matthew Barr.
Changes Over Time
In 1993, Granny Goose bought another snack brand called Laura Scudder. But the snack world was very competitive! Big companies like PepsiCo (who makes Frito-Lay) and Anheuser-Busch (who made Eagle Snacks) were also selling lots of snacks. Because of this tough competition, Granny Goose found it hard to make money. So, the company was put up for sale in 1995.
In 2000, Granny Goose moved most of its main operations from Oakland to Kaysville, Utah. That same year, a company called Snak King bought many of Granny Goose's snack lines. This included their corn chips, tortilla chips, popcorn, potato chips, and other crunchy snacks.
Today, the Granny Goose potato chip line is made by Shearer's Foods. They make these chips under a special agreement with Snak King.
Granny Goose in the Philippines
Granny Goose snacks also became popular in the Philippines! There, the brand was known for its corn-based snacks like Tortillos and Kornets. General Milling Corporation (GMC) made these snacks under a license from Granny Goose Foods Inc. starting in 1982. Later, GMC actually bought the rights to the Granny Goose name for the Philippines. In 2008, another company called Universal Robina Corporation bought the Granny Goose snack business from GMC.
Meet Granny Goose: The Mascot
The Cartoon Goose
The logo and mascot for Granny Goose is a friendly cartoon goose. This goose is also named Granny Goose! It's an anthropomorphic character, which means it has human-like qualities.
Fun Commercials
In the 1960s, Granny Goose had some memorable TV commercials. The company's spokesperson in these ads was an actor named Philip Carey. He played a tough, manly character who called himself "Granny Goose." He would appear in different roles, like a cowboy or even a James Bond-style spy! It was a funny and unexpected way to advertise snacks.
