Grant Andrew Long (born March 12, 1966) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 15 years. During his career, he played in over 1,000 games. Grant came from a family of athletes. His uncle John Long and cousin Terry Mills also played in the NBA. His brother, Julius Long, is a professional boxer.
Playing in the NBA
Grant Long was picked by the Miami Heat in the 1988 NBA draft. He was the 33rd player chosen overall. He played for the Heat from 1988 to 1994. He then joined the Atlanta Hawks and played there until 1996.
Teams and Highlights
Grant played for several teams during his long career. After the Hawks, he played for the Detroit Pistons from 1996 to 1998. He returned to the Atlanta Hawks for a short time in 1998. From 1999 to 2001, he played for the Vancouver Grizzlies, which later became the Memphis Grizzlies. His final team was the Boston Celtics in 2002-2003.
Grant was known as a strong Power forward. He was a great rebounder and defender. He played a total of 1,003 regular season games in the NBA. He scored 9,518 points and grabbed 6,154 rebounds in his career.
Before joining the NBA, Grant was a star college player. He played for Eastern Michigan University from 1984 to 1988. In 1988, he was named the MAC Player of the Year. He was also chosen for the First-team All-MAC twice, in 1987 and 1988. His jersey number, 43, was retired by Eastern Michigan Eagles to honor his achievements.
After Basketball: Broadcasting
After his playing career, Grant Long became a sports broadcaster. From 2008 to 2014, he worked as a broadcast analyst for the Oklahoma City Thunder. In this role, he helped explain the games to viewers. In October 2014, he joined Fox Sports Detroit. There, he worked as an analyst and sideline reporter for the Detroit Pistons.
