Where is Graymoor-Devondale?
Graymoor-Devondale is located in the northeastern part of Jefferson County. It shares borders with several other communities. To the southeast, you'll find Lyndon. To the south is St. Matthews. On its western side is Windy Hills.
The city is also bordered by Crossgate to the northwest and Bancroft to the north. The larger area of Louisville/Jefferson County surrounds it from the northwest, north, and northeast.
How big is the city?
The western edge of Graymoor-Devondale is next to Interstate 264. You can get into the city from Exit 21 (Westport Road) or Exit 22 (U.S. Route 42). The center of Downtown Louisville is about 8 miles (13 km) to the west.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Graymoor-Devondale covers a total area of about 0.74 square miles (1.9 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land, with only a tiny amount of water.
A Look at Graymoor-Devondale's Past
The city of Graymoor-Devondale was created when two separate cities, Devondale and Graymoor, merged. Both of these original cities were named after local farms.
How Devondale Started
Devondale became an official city around 1958. It was named after a farm in the area.
How Graymoor Started
Graymoor was also named after a local farm. This farm, in turn, got its name from a monastery called the Society of the Atonement in Garrison, New York. Graymoor officially became a city on November 17, 1959. It also included a nearby neighborhood called Woodstock.
The Cities Join Together
Graymoor and Devondale decided to merge on November 6, 1985. They officially became one city on November 23, 1987. This merger was important because it allowed the new city to become a "4th-class city" in 1992. This status gave them more control over how land was used and developed, especially around the Westport Road and Herr Lane intersection.
