Greatstone is a charming village located right on the coast of Romney Marsh in Kent, England. It sits to the east of the town of New Romney. The village is actually split between two local areas: New Romney and Lydd.
Back in the 1920s, there were big plans to build many homes and facilities here. However, only a few were actually constructed at that time. Much later, in the 1960s and 1970s, a lot more building happened. This led to Greatstone growing into the good-sized community it is today.
Life in Greatstone
Greatstone has a friendly community feel. The local church, St Peter's, was built in the 1960s. It is connected to the older All Saints church in Lydd.
You can find a small group of shops at one end of the village. The other end of Greatstone connects to Lydd-on-Sea. Kids in the area usually attend Greatstone Primary School. After primary school, most students go on to The Marsh Academy. Some also attend Folkestone School for Girls or Harvey Grammar School.
Did you know the beach at Greatstone was featured on the TV show Teletubbies? It appeared in an episode called "Windy Day" in 2015!
Amazing Sound Mirrors
Greatstone is near a fascinating historical site known as RAF Denge. This area is famous for its huge concrete "sound mirrors." These giant structures were built in the 1920s and 1930s. Their purpose was to detect the sound of enemy aircraft approaching across the English Channel.
Before radar was invented, these sound mirrors acted like giant ears. They could pick up the faint sounds of distant planes. This gave early warning of air raids. It's a cool example of old technology!
Getting Around Greatstone
Greatstone has two main roads that connect it to other places. One road leads to Lydd, Lydd Airport, and then on to East Sussex. The other road takes you to New Romney and the rest of Kent.
A fun way to travel through the village is on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. This miniature steam railway runs right through Greatstone. It even has a station called Romney Sands. For a while, from 1937 to 1967, Greatstone also had a national railway station called Greatstone-on-Sea Halt.
If you need to get to other nearby towns, Stagecoach in East Kent runs local bus services.
