Green Spring is located north of Springfield. It sits near where the North and South Branches of the Potomac River meet. This area is also important for railroads. The South Branch Valley Railroad ends here, connecting to the old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad main line.

A unique feature of Green Spring is its one-lane low-water toll bridge. This bridge connects Green Spring Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 1) to Maryland Route 51 in Oldtown, Allegany County, Maryland. It's one of only 17 privately owned toll bridges in the entire United States. The cost to cross the bridge is currently US$1.50.

History of Green Spring

Green Spring became an important place in 1819. At that time, the government decided to set up a public warehouse for tobacco nearby. This helped the town grow.

A famous person named John Jeremiah Jacob was born in Green Spring on December 9, 1829. He later became a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1869. From 1871 to 1877, he served as the Governor of West Virginia. Jacob passed away in Wheeling in 1893 and is buried in Indian Mound Cemetery in Romney.

The Green Spring Train Station, built between 1882 and 1885, is still one of the most important historic buildings in the town.
