Green Township is home to a few smaller communities. These places are often called unincorporated communities. This means they don't have their own separate local government like a city or village. Instead, they are part of the larger township.

Flanders: A Historic Spot

  • Flanders is one of these communities. You can find it in the northeast part of the township. It's about 15.5 miles (25 km) west of downtown Alpena. Flanders started around a sawmill in 1869. It was named after S.W. Flanders, a local lumber merchant. This community even had its own post office from 1885 to 1914.

Hillman: A Village Nearby

  • Hillman is a village that is mostly in a different county, Montmorency County. However, a very small part of Hillman, with just a few residents, is actually inside Green Township.

Spratt: Named for Lumber Pioneers

  • Spratt is another unincorporated community in Green Township. It's about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south of Flanders. This community was named after the Spratt family. They were important lumbermen (people who worked in the timber industry) in the early days of the area. Spratt also had a post office, which operated from 1900 to 1934.
