Greenup is a small village located in Cumberland County, Illinois, United States. It sits right along the Embarras River. In 2020, about 1,365 people lived here. Greenup is part of the larger Charleston–Mattoon area.
The village got its name from William C. Greenup. He was a surveyor for the National Road, a very important old highway. In 1834, he planned out the town. Greenup also served as the main town, or "county seat," for Cumberland County for a while, from 1843 to 1857.

History of Greenup
Greenup was officially planned and created in 1834. It became the very first county seat for Cumberland County in 1843. This meant it was the most important town for the county's government and business. It held this important role until 1855.
Geography and Location
Greenup is found in the southeastern part of Cumberland County. The Embarras River, which flows into the Wabash River, runs near the village.
Two major roads pass by Greenup. U.S. Route 40 goes through the southern part of the village. Interstate 70 runs through the northern section, with an exit (Exit 119) that connects to Illinois Route 130. This makes it easy to travel to nearby cities. For example, Effingham is about 22 miles (35 km) to the west. Terre Haute, Indiana, is about 44 miles (71 km) to the east.
The village covers an area of about 1.75 square miles (4.53 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land, with very little water.

Students who live in Greenup attend schools in the Cumberland Community Unit School District 77. The elementary, middle, and high schools for this district are located in a nearby town called Toledo.

Greenup has been home to several interesting people:
- Lincoln Bancroft – He was a state representative for Illinois and also served as the mayor of Greenup.
- Abe ("Ab") Bowman – He was a professional baseball pitcher for the Cleveland Indians team. He was born in Greenup.
- James A. Peters – A scientist who studied reptiles and amphibians (a herpetologist). He was a curator at the Smithsonian Institution.
- Bobbi Trout – A brave pioneer aviator, meaning she was one of the first people to fly airplanes. She was born in Greenup.
- Cy Warman – An author from the 19th century. He was born and grew up near Greenup.
- Bill Wylde – A gunsmith and the inventor of the .223 Wylde rifle chamber.
