History of Greenvale
Greenvale got its name from a farm called "Greenvale." This farm belonged to a local farmer named John McKerchar. The area was first known by the name of the parish it was in, Yuroke.
The first Greenvale Post Office opened in a country area in 1871. It closed in 1969. As the suburb grew, a new post office opened in 1996.
Building new homes in Greenvale started in 1972. But the suburb really grew a lot in the 1980s. Today, Greenvale has two shopping centres, three primary schools, a community centre, and two kindergartens. There is also a private school called Aitken College. The Greenvale Reservoir, a large water storage, was built in the north in 1973.
Greenvale Sanatorium: A Place for Care
The Greenvale Sanatorium was built in 1905. It had wooden buildings and small huts. The Victorian Government built it as a place for people who were sick to get better. It was placed away from the public to keep everyone safe.
In 1940, a new two-storey brick hospital building was added. It was called the Percy Everett Building. The old wooden buildings were taken down in 1973. By 1956, new medicines meant fewer people needed the sanatorium. So, it became a place for older people to live and receive care. It closed its doors in 1998. The land was sold in 2004 and became part of Woodlands Historic Park. The building was completely removed by the end of 2006.
