Greenwood Park Mall is a popular shopping mall located in Greenwood, Indiana. It's a big center for shopping and businesses along U.S. Highway 31, on the south side of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. Like many other shopping centers in central Indiana, Greenwood Park Mall is owned and run by a company called Simon Property Group.

The mall has 149 different stores for you to explore. It also has four main "anchor" stores, which are usually large department stores. These are Dick's Sporting Goods, JCPenney, Macy's (which used to be called Lazarus), and Von Maur (which was once Blocks, then Montgomery Ward).

Greenwood Park Mall is huge! It has about 1,287,869 square feet (119,646.9 m2) of shopping space. This makes it the fourth largest shopping mall in Indiana. Only Castleton Square in Indianapolis, Glenbrook Square in Fort Wayne, and Southlake Mall in Merrillville are bigger.

How the Mall Started

The land for Greenwood Park Mall was bought in 1966. It was built by a company called Atkinson & Company and cost about $25 million. When it first opened, it was known as the Greenwood Shopping Center.

In 1977, another company, Melvin Simon & Associates, bought the mall. Then, in 1980, it got a big makeover and was renamed Greenwood Park Mall. After this, it became a much bigger and more modern shopping spot.

Shoppers and Size

By 1990, Greenwood Park Mall was very popular. About 10 million shoppers visited every year, which is around 28,000 people each day! The inside of the mall, where people walk, is also very large. It covers about 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2) of space.

Greenwood Park Mall is special because it's the only mall in the Indianapolis area that still has an Old Navy store. Other malls like Lafayette Square Mall, Washington Square, Circle Centre Mall, Castleton Square, Speedway Supercenter, and Glendale Mall have all closed their Old Navy locations.

Mall Upgrades Over Time

In 2003, Greenwood Park Mall had its first major renovation since 1980. This update changed a lot of the mall's original "park" theme. For example, they removed the live plants, trees, park-style benches, and outdoor-looking lampposts. Instead, they went for a more modern and fancy design.

The food court also changed from a plaza style to a more open layout. Even the outside entrances to the mall got a new look. By the spring of 2004, all the work was finished. The mall still looks mostly the same as it did after this 2003 renovation.

New Additions and Changes

In 2007, a building that used to be an L.S. Ayres store was taken down. In its place, a new "lifestyle center" was built. This added about 115,000 square feet (10,700 m2) more shopping space to the mall. The new section officially opened on November 8, 2007.

More recently, in 2018, it was announced that the Sears store at the mall would be closing. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country.

In 2019, exciting news came out that a Dave and Buster's would open in the spot where the JCPenney Home Store used to be. This new restaurant and entertainment place is 34,500 square feet (3,210 m2) big and opened its doors on November 15, 2020.
