How GEM Started

Grenoble Ecole de Management has a rich history of growth and innovation. It began with a focus on how technology and business work together.

• 1984: The school was founded as Groupe ESC Grenoble. It was one of the first French business schools to teach about managing technology.
• 1988: GEM launched its first special Master's program. This program focused on marketing new technologies around the world.
• 1990: The school had 20 agreements for student exchanges with universities in other countries. This helped students study abroad.
• 1993: GEM created the first Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program in France. This is a high-level degree for business professionals.
• 1995: The Master in International Business (MIB) program was started. This program taught students how to manage technology across different cultures.
• 1997: New spaces were opened at the school. These areas were for multimedia and international study programs.
• 2000: GEM received the EQUIS accreditation. This means it met high quality standards for business schools in Europe. The school also opened an office in Shanghai, China.
• 2001: GEM became a multi-site school. It started offering programs in other countries like Russia, Moldova, Malta, and China. At this time, 40% of its students came from outside France.
• 2003: Groupe ESC Grenoble changed its name to Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM).

• 2004: GEM earned two more important accreditations: AACSB and AMBA. This means GEM is "triple accredited," showing its high quality worldwide.
• 2007: The study of Geopolitics became a required subject for students. Geopolitics is about how geography and politics affect countries and businesses.
• 2008: GEM became a founding member of the GIANT Innovation Campus. This is a big science and technology hub in Grenoble.
• 2009: The school moved up in the Financial Times ranking. It became one of the top 20 business schools in Europe.
• 2010: Grenoble Ecole de Management partnered with Harvard Business School in the United States.
• 2013: GEM opened a new campus in Paris. This campus offers international and advanced programs.
• 2016: GEM and the University of Grenoble-Alpes announced they would offer joint degrees. This means students could earn degrees from both institutions. GEM also partnered with GISMA Business School to open a campus in Berlin.
