Groningen is a small, unincorporated community located in Pine County, Minnesota, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's part of Dell Grove Township.
You can find Groningen just northwest of a town called Sandstone. It's near where two county roads, Pine County 35 and Pine County 28 (also known as Groningen Road), meet. A popular walking and biking path, the Willard Munger State Trail, also passes by here. This trail used to be a railway line called the Northern Pacific Railway.
A Glimpse into Groningen's History
Groningen is located in the northeast part of Dell Grove Township. It got its name from a place in the Netherlands. There's a province (like a state) called Groningen there, and also a capital city with the same name.
This community wasn't always called Groningen. At first, it was known as Miller Station. Later, when it had a post office, its name changed a few times. From 1877 to 1881, it was called Belknap. Then, it became Groningen from 1896 to 1913. After a short break, it was called Groningen again from 1917 until 1954.
