Early Life and First Steps in TV
Gugu Liberato was born in São Paulo, Brazil. His parents were immigrants from Portugal. Even when he was young, Gugu loved television. He used to write letters to a famous TV host named Silvio Santos, sharing his ideas for new shows!
When Gugu was just 14 years old, he got his first job in television. He started as a helper for a show called Domingo no Parque (Sunday at the Park). This show was presented by Silvio Santos on the SBT channel. Gugu quickly became one of the most famous entertainers in Brazil's TV history.
Gugu's Amazing Career
Gugu first started studying to become a dentist at the University of Marilia. But his dream was always TV! Silvio Santos remembered Gugu's ideas and invited him to work in front of the cameras. So, Gugu left dentistry to follow his passion.
In 1981, Gugu hosted one of his first shows, Sessão Premiada. Then, in 1982, a new show called Viva a Noite (Live the Night) was created for Saturday nights. Gugu became the main host of this popular program. While hosting Viva a Noite, he also helped direct other shows and worked on a newsletter for the Programa Silvio Santos.
Gugu was not just a TV host. He was also a smart businessman! After the success of the music group Menudo in 1984, Gugu helped create and promote Brazilian music groups like Dominó and Polegar. These groups became very popular, showing Gugu's talent for business.
In 1987, Gugu was very successful. Another big TV channel, Rede Globo, wanted to hire him. But Silvio Santos really wanted Gugu to stay at SBT. So, Silvio Santos made Gugu a huge offer, giving him a lot of the Sunday TV schedule and a much higher salary. Gugu decided to stay with SBT.
Gugu started hosting Sunday shows on SBT in April 1988. He led popular programs like Passa ou Repassa (Pass or Repass) and Cidade Contra Cidade (City Against City). He also co-hosted Roletrando with Silvio Santos.
Interestingly, the show that Rede Globo had planned for Gugu, Domingão do Faustão, ended up being hosted by Fausto Silva. This show became a big competitor to Gugu's own Sunday program, Domingo Legal. For many years in the late 1990s, Gugu's show was very popular, often getting very high ratings.
Family Life and Passing
Gugu Liberato had a family with Rose Miriam di Matteo. They had three children together.
On November 20, 2019, Gugu had an accident at his home in Windermere, USA. He was trying to fix something on his air conditioner and fell, hitting his head. He was taken to the hospital, and his condition was very serious. Sadly, on November 22, 2019, it was confirmed that Gugu Liberato had passed away.
