Characters
Here are some of the main characters you'll meet in the TV show and books:
Main characters
- Gwen Jones is the main character. She uses magic to fight evil. In the first episode, she learns she is the reincarnation of Guinevere, who was a queen from King Arthur's time. Her mother, Karen Jones, was captured by an evil spirit. Gwen was adopted by the Rosens, who own a shop selling magical items. (played by Tamara Hope).
- Tasha Myers is Josh's sister. She works at a cafe called the Arc, where students often hang out. She is Gwen's best friend and helps Gwen fight evil. (played by Greta Larkins).
- Josh Myers is Tasha's brother. He is very different from his sister. Sometimes he acts like Gwen's boyfriend, along with Michael. (played by Damien Bodie).
- Michael Medina is Gwen's friend and sometimes boyfriend. A troublesome fairy named Gadowain used to protect him. (played by Yani Gellman). He appears after Episode 9.
- Spencer Huang is a friend of Tasha's. (played by Aljin Abella).
- Reine Davidson is the main bad guy for Gwen and her friends. She knows some magic herself. She likes Josh and later Michael. (played by Bridget Neval).
- Merlin often gives Gwen advice, but he can be tricky. He is a spirit from the past. (played by Ted Hamilton).
- Patrick O'Leary is one of Gwen's teachers. He seems mysterious, but he is actually Gwen's father. (played by Don Halbert).
- Gadowain is a mischievous fairy. He was Michael's protector. (played by Ian Dixon).
Minor characters
These characters appear in fewer episodes or are not as important to the main story.
- Arthur was the king of Camelot and Guinevere's husband. He appears in flashbacks. (played by Chris Hemsworth).
- Lancelot was a knight of Camelot. He appeared in one flashback. (played by Alex Tsitsopoulos)
- Fire Bromsky is part of Reine's group. Her real name is Frances. (played by Vanessa Elliott).
- Wind Winters is also part of Reine's group. Her real name is Winifred Winters. (played by Katie Campbell).
- Morgana La Faye is an evil witch who fights against Gwen and Merlin. (played by Mercia Deane-Johns).
- Penelope Blatt is the Socials teacher. (played by Pepe Trevor).
- Harve Rosen is Gwen's foster father. (played by Dennis Coard).
- Louise Rosen is Gwen's foster mother. (played by Briony Behets).
- Katie Dawson is Gwen's foster sister. She is also in foster care. (played by Madeline Page).
- Karen Jones is Gwen's mom. (played by Trudy Hellier).
Magic
In the series, people who have lived many lifetimes have magical abilities. The older a soul is, the more powerful its magic seems to be. Gwen has lived many lifetimes, so she has strong magic. Her mom has some magic, but not as much as Gwen. This idea is talked about in the second episode.
In the fifth episode, Weird Sisters, it's said that objects themselves don't have magic. They just help the person using them. However, spells can be cast on objects. For example, the stone from Warwe and Mineer has magic on it.
The small forest area where Gwen talks to Merlin is special. It's near two ley lines, which are like invisible energy lines on Earth. This helps Gwen focus her magic better.
Magical artifacts
There are several magical items in the show. The most important one is a large, glowing blue gemstone called Merlin's Stone. It's so powerful it could make someone immortal. That's why Morgana wants it.
Gwen's pendant is a tiny piece of Merlin's Stone. It helps her use magic. She has used it to erase memories, influence people, and move objects with her mind. The pendant glows when it's near Merlin's Stone.
In the first episode, Gwen gets a book from someone unknown. In the third episode, the book is destroyed because it has evil magic inside.
Later in the series, in the episode Rebellion, it's revealed that Gwen's Pendant is actually more powerful than Merlin's Stone.
Settings
Most of the action in Guinevere Jones happens in a few main places. The fictional Griffin High School is where many school scenes take place. It's mentioned that the show is set near Melbourne, Australia.
Near the school is a small forest glade. This is where Gwen meets and talks to Merlin. Merlin explains that this glade is where two ley lines cross. It's also where Gwen learns a lot about her magic.
The Arc is a cafe and arcade where Tasha works. Many students hang out there. Gwen's foster parents run a store called The New Sage, which sells herbs. Gwen and her foster family live on the second floor of that building. The hospital in the show is called St. James's Hospital.
Production
The series was made by companies from both Canada and Australia. The Canadian companies were Original Pictures Inc and Ibis Entertainment, based in Winnipeg. The Australian company was Crawford Productions. The show was filmed at St. Hellier's Convent, a very old building in Melbourne, Australia.
