Guinga facts for kids
Guinga (whose real name is Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar) was born on June 10, 1950. He is a famous Brazilian guitarist and composer. Guinga grew up in Madureira, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. When he was a child, people called him "Gringo" because his skin was pale. His artistic name, Guinga, came from how he said that word.
Guinga's Life Story
Guinga started playing the guitar when he was just eleven years old. His uncle taught him how to play. He began writing his own music at 14. When he was 17, in 1967, one of his songs, "Sou Só Solidão," made it to the first round of a big music contest called the Festival Internacional da Canção. Later, at age 26, he studied classical guitar for five years with a teacher named Jodacil Damasceno.
During the 1970s, Guinga played guitar for famous singers like Beth Carvalho and João Nogueira. He also recorded music with samba legends such as Cartola and Clara Nunes. Around this time, he started working with the poet Paulo Cesar Pinheiro. They wrote many songs together. Important artists like Elis Regina, Nelson Gonçalves, Miúcha, Clara Nunes, and Michel Legrand recorded their songs.
Interestingly, Guinga also had another job for almost 30 years. He worked as a dentist! His music career really took off in 1990. That's when Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins created a music label called Velas. They did this to release Guinga's first album. This album featured songs he wrote with lyricist Aldir Blanc.
Guinga is well-known for his amazing songwriting and his guitar skills. He mixes many different types of music in his songs. These include choro, samba, baião, frevo, modinha, waltz, foxtrot, blues, classical music, and jazz. His music often has complex harmonies and rhythms, but it always sounds beautiful and melodic.
