Ivan Guimarães Lins, born on June 16, 1945, is a famous Brazilian musician. He has won a Latin Grammy Award. For more than 50 years, Ivan Lins has been a singer and songwriter, creating Brazilian popular music (MPB) and jazz songs.

His first big song, "Madalena", was recorded by the singer Elis Regina in 1970. Another one of his popular songs, "Love Dance", became a hit in 1989. It is now one of the most recorded songs in modern music. Many famous artists have sung his songs, including George Benson, Michael Bublé, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Sting, and Barbra Streisand.

Life and Early Years

Ivan Lins was born in Ituverava, a city in São Paulo, Brazil. When he was younger, he lived in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. This was because his father, who was a naval engineer, was studying at M.I.T.. Ivan later studied at the Military College in Rio de Janeiro. He also earned a degree in industrial chemical engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Before he became a musician, Ivan Lins even thought about playing professional volleyball! But he soon discovered his amazing talent for music. Today, Ivan Lins lives in both Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Lisbon, Portugal. He was married to Lucinha Lins, and they have two children, including Cláudio Lins.

Musical Journey and Famous Songs

Ivan Lins has released many albums throughout his career. He has also written several well-known songs that have become classics. Some of these include "Love Dance" and "Começar de Novo" (which means "Starting Over"). The English version of "Começar de Novo" is called "The Island."

In the mid-1980s, Ivan Lins worked with jazz musicians Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour on an album called Harlequin. This album was very successful and popular. Ivan Lins also wrote the music for the Brazilian movie Dois Córregos.

For a long time, Ivan Lins has worked with his songwriting partner, Vítor Martins. Their songs often have beautiful harmonies and a special jazz feel.

Working with Other Artists

Ivan Lins has appeared as a guest on many other artists' albums. He was on the albums Dois Mundos (1998) and Recorded in Rio (2003) by Dutch artist Josee Koning. He also sang on Michael Bublé's album Call Me Irresponsible in 2007. That same year, he sang a duet with Paula Cole on her CD Courage. Ivan Lins also appeared on Jane Monheit's album Surrender (2007), which included his song "Rio de Maio."

In October 2000, a special concert was held at Carnegie Hall in New York City to honor Ivan Lins. This event celebrated his music and career. Many famous performers from different music styles took part in the concert and on a tribute album called A Love Affair. This was a very important moment for any musician.

As of 2018, Ivan Lins continued to tour in North America sometimes. He performed at places like Yoshi's and the Blue Note in New York City. In May 2008, he performed with Rosa Passos at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Another famous Brazilian singer, Simone, is also known for singing Ivan Lins's songs beautifully.

In 2023, Ivan Lins's song "Um Novo Tempo," released in 1980, was played at Beijing Tiananmen Square. This song was a symbol of resistance against the military government in Brazil at the time. It was played to welcome Brazilian President Lula during his visit. Ivan Lins shared on social media how emotional and meaningful this was for him and his songwriting partner, Vitor Martins.
