Ivan Guimarães Lins (born June 16, 1945) is a famous Brazilian musician. He has won many awards, including several Latin Grammys. For over fifty years, he has been an active singer, performer, and songwriter of Brazilian popular music (MPB) and jazz.
His first big hit song, "Madalena", was recorded by the singer Elis Regina in 1970. Another one of his popular songs, "Love Dance", became a hit in 1989. It is now one of the most recorded songs in modern music! Many famous artists have sung his songs, including Michael Bublé, Ella Fitzgerald, Sting, and Barbra Streisand.

Ivan Lins was born in Ituverava, a city in São Paulo, Brazil. When he was younger, he lived for several years in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. His father was studying there at M.I.T.. Ivan later studied at the Military College in Rio de Janeiro.
Before he discovered his amazing musical talent, Ivan Lins even thought about becoming a professional volleyball player! Today, he lives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Lisbon, Portugal.
His Music and Work
Ivan Lins has released many albums throughout his career. He has also written several songs that have become very well-known. Some of these include "Love Dance", "Começar de Novo" (which means "Starting Over"), and "Velas Içadas". The English version of "Começar de Novo" is called "The Island".
In the mid-1980s, Ivan Lins made a jazz fusion album called Harlequin with musicians Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour. This album was very successful. He also wrote the music for a Brazilian movie called Dois Córregos.
Ivan Lins often works with his longtime songwriting partner, Vítor Martins. Their songs are known for having beautiful harmonies and a special jazz feel.
Ivan Lins has also performed with other artists on their albums. He appeared on albums by Dutch artist Josee Koning and Michael Bublé. In 2007, he sang a duet with singer/songwriter Paula Cole on her CD Courage. He also guested on Jane Monheit's album Surrender, which features his song "Rio de Maio".
In October 2000, a special concert was held at Carnegie Hall in New York City to celebrate Ivan Lins and his music. This was a big honor for any musician! A tribute album called A Love Affair was also released, featuring many different artists singing his songs.
Ivan Lins continues to tour and perform. He has played at famous jazz clubs like Yoshi's and the Blue Note. In May 2008, he performed with Rosa Passos at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Another famous Brazilian singer, Simone, is also well-known for singing Ivan Lins's songs.
In 2023, one of Ivan Lins's songs, "Um Novo Tempo" (meaning "A New Time"), was played at Beijing Tiananmen Square. This song, released in 1980, was a song of hope and resistance during a difficult time in Brazil. It was played to welcome Brazilian President Lula during a visit. Ivan Lins shared on social media how emotional and meaningful this was for him and his songwriting partner, Vitor Martins.
Awards and Honors
Ivan Lins has received many important awards for his music.
In 2005, he won two Latin Grammy Awards. He won for Album of the Year and Best MPB (Música popular brasileira) Album for his album Cantando Histórias. He was the first Brazilian artist to win the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year!
In 2009, Ivan Lins was nominated for three Latin Grammy Awards for his album Regência: Vince Mendoza. He won the award for Best MPB Album that year.
He was also nominated for the 16th Latin Grammy Awards in 2015 for his album América Brasil.
