Discovering Gulnare

Location and Connections

Gulnare is found in the Mid North region of South Australia. It is about 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Gladstone. It is also about 57 kilometers (35 miles) southeast of Port Pirie. The town is situated near the Horrocks Highway, which is an important road in the area.

A Look at the Past Railway

Long ago, Gulnare was connected by a railway line. This railway was built in 1894. It was first a narrow gauge line, meaning the tracks were closer together. Later, in 1927, it was changed to a wider gauge. This railway line was closed by 1993, so trains no longer run through Gulnare.

The Story Behind the Name

How Gulnare Got Its Name

The town of Gulnare was named after the beautiful Gulnare Plain. This plain got its name from either John Horrocks or William Light. They were important explorers in South Australia's history.

A Name from Old Tales

The name "Gulnare" has an interesting background. It comes from a character named Gulnare in a book called Turkish Tales by a famous writer named Byron. It is also the name of Colonel Light's ship, which was called Gulnare. Both these names come from an older English spelling of "Julnar the Sea-born." Julnar is a character from the famous collection of stories known as the Arabian Nights.
