Gumlu is a small town and coastal area in Queensland, Australia. It's part of the Whitsunday Region. In 2021, about 124 people lived in Gumlu.
Where is Gumlu?
Gumlu is located between two other towns, Home Hill and Bowen. It's about 39 kilometers (24 miles) by road from Home Hill. It's also about 66 kilometers (41 miles) by road from Bowen.
The main town area of Gumlu is towards the eastern side of the locality. The Bruce Highway and the North Coast railway line both pass through Gumlu from east to west. There are three railway stops in the area:
- Bobawaba railway station
- Wakala railway station (this one is no longer used)
- Gumlu railway station (this one serves the town)
The north-eastern edge of Gumlu is the Coral Sea. Molongle Creek forms the eastern border, and Wangaratta Creek forms the western border. The north-eastern part of Gumlu is mostly flat land near the sea. The south-western part gradually rises to hills about 300 meters (980 feet) high.
A Look Back in Time
The name Gumlu comes from the Gumlu railway station. The railway department named it on January 15, 1912. People believe the name is a changed version of an Aboriginal word, gunyaloo, which means rock wallaby.
A school called Molongle Creek Provisional School first opened on October 13, 1913. It became Molongle Creek State School in 1914. Then, in 1920, its name was changed to Gumlu State School.
Around 2017, many new houses were built in Gumlu. This was because a new coal mine was opening nearby.
